Subject: DML: Re:Dead Pedal
Joe,
Many vehicles that has manual transmission have "dead pedal" in them, or it
is
an option to have one installed.
A "dead pedal" is a unit that helps you "rest your left foot" when your are
not clutching.
The dead pedal has a rubber pedal pad (same configuration as the clutch and
brake pad) that sits on top of a metal bracket. This bracket and rubber pad
is now a unit that is mounted with fasteners in the driver's side of the
vehicle's compartment, either on the floor, or in this case on the left side
of the fender wall right by your left foot. When installed, it looks like
the
vehicle has four pedals going across the floor on the driver's side floor.
Configuration as below:
DEAD PEDAL - CLUTCH PEDAL - BRAKE PEDAL - GAS PEDAL
It does nothing in the operation of the vehicle, just to rest your left foot
and the leg, that is why it is called a dead pedal. It will support your
foot
and leg when you are not using it to clutch and shifting your tranny. IT
HELPS ON LONG DRIVES. Every had your foot hanging in suspension doing
nothing? Tiring is it not? This keeps both legs and feet in a "harmonized
symmetrical position." Love it. One of the best investments in the
vehicle.

You get the kits from Eleanor Rogers, DBA "Island Turbos",. They
advertise in DMC News. The kit runs around $6K.
No they are not legal in CA as yet. Even though the engine produces
emissions that are well within the legal parameters, in CA it is
illegal to modify an approved exhaust system. Really dumb and
typical of a bureaucracy run amok.

Cost? Over $5,000. Plus. There is no shipping, and no installation.
Shipping is extra, and you have to install or get a qualified and

California legal? Probably if you have the "CAT" on.

Dear Nick-san,

I guess the most first & second shift problem is extend of shift linkage
cable.
My Delorean linkage cable was extended about 1.5 - 2mm. When you open
cockpit
shift gear module inside, you can find shift gear limiter plate which
prevents
first / second and reverse gear interference.
Your shift trouble will be temporaly fixed if you remove this plate, but
gear
interference will occur. The best fix is Dave's specifed way. (I tried to
trim
cockpit side but in vain, you had better to fix transmission side)
I didn't have a good garage, so I made special limiter plate for temporaly
use.
ps. Thanks David-san, hope to see you in Japan !!!

Nick,
The company's name is AUTO SPECIALTY. They are located in
Torrance
California. I'm sorry I don't have the phone number with me, but they
are
listed on both the 1-800 directory and the 310 directory.
As far as performance goes, I think the crosss drilled rotors
are great.
I've combined them with semi-metallic brake pads (Auto Specialy Maxis
Brand) and have had great results. I still believe the diameter of the
Delorean's brake rotors are too small, but by cross drilling the rotors
and
using semi-metallic pads, I find that I am not hesitant to stomp on the
brakes if the situation requires it (whereas with the regular rotors, I
was
concerned with overheating and warping). Until a company decides to
produce larger diameter vented rotors for the Delorean, I beleive the
cross
drilled rotor is the best replacement.
By the way, I believe that PJ Grady and DMC Houston are selling these
rotors now. I would check them out first.

Nine owners gathered in Havertown, Pennsylvania, on April 26 along

Social and Safety Check.
Attending were: Russ Anemone, Larry Arnold, Aldo Buono, Frank Brennan,
Ron Finelli, Dennis Lowery, Kayo Ong, Bob Petruska, and Ed Singer.
There was another De Lorean present without its owner. Rob was
trucking a D to his shop from the D.C. area. Another D needed
assistance making it to Ron Fineeli's home. Kayo's speedometer cable
snapped at the spindle just a few blocks from Ron's. Ron and Aldo
towed Kayo's D with a rope to Ron's. Rob had not brought a spare
cable from his Long Island shop. So, Ron decided to take the cable
out of one of the two Ds that he owns, and Rob installed it in Kayo's
D. Since Kayo is alive and well on the DML, I think we can safely that
he made it back to Manhattan without any further delays.
Rob Grady performed thorough inspections, and Ron and Aldo performed
several door adjustments. All of this was done complimentary as a
benefit of membership in De Lorean Midatlantic.
The social closed with a membership meeting at which the newly revised

who have renewed or joined this year will receive their copies shortly
in the mail.

I should point out that the keys are Hand made, and for this reason
there
can be some surface imperfections. I never know to what degree these
will
show up until the key comes out of the die. I should also note that it
takes two days to produce a set of keys, so please understand that the

My original clutch line ran down the driver side of the "X" frame.
It was
(is) held in place by plastic zip ties. I ran the new braid line right
along side of the old one and used new Zip ties to hold it in place.
Install the new line starting at the front (driver end), zip-tie it
against the installed line, then disconnect the driver end first, install
the new line, and put the protective nipple on the old line. thread the new
line along side the old and zip tie it in place. Disconnect the old line
and install the new line. Tighten the driver end per manual specs, leave
clutch end with just a snug fit. You can now bleed the line and test the
system.
You can leave the original in in place or cut it's ties to remove
it!
I had my D on 20 inch Jack Stands so I would have room to work.
I don't think it can be done with out jacking up the D.

Early cars were criticized by the automobile media for not having a
place
to rest your left foot when not shifting. They suggested the car needed
a
dead pedal on the far left for a foot rest. This was comon on some
sports
cars and DMC was really watching the reaction to the first test cars
looked
at by the press. The dead pedal suggestion was taken seriously and was
added to production cars at some point during the '81 model run. It
doesn't
appear in the parts book but my car is a Nov '81, vin # 6938 and it has
the
dead pedal. Incidently, it also has the hood with grooves and no fuel
filler flap. I bought the car new and there were '82 models in the
dealers
inventory along with '81's. The 82's had smooth hoods with the DeLorean
lettering on the left front corner of the hood.

Guy,
The horns are part of fuse circuit No.6, the hazard flashers are on the
same fuse, if the flashers work than you should get power to the horns. To
test the horn circuit unplug one of the connectors at either horn & insert
a 12V test lamp or meter between the disconnected wire and ground, if you
have power the horns are N.G., a common problem with the original horns.

Hi Marc,
80% blow-by? just as a matter or interest do you know how he
came to the
conclusion it is blow-by. Or do you mean 20% compression. Its very
unusual
to have that much loss and still run smoothly. 80% suggest several
broken
rings, which could ruin the cylinder and Piston. Is your oil black and
gritty? You could also have a burned valve and/or seat and get low
compression. It also possible but unlikely that a cam lobe is worn or
the
shaft is bent.
I should mention I have no doubt that PJ's is right on the
money, I am
just interested in the condition. Usually if Compression is very low in
one
cylinder it will very with all the rest, when just one is flat and the
rest
OK, it generally means a massive failure of some kind.

I believe this is attached with adhesive. I bought one of those emblems
at Kapac two years ago, and it came with double-faced tape on the
back, but no posts or anything else that would pass through holes in the
luggage compartment lid.
Are you planning to remove your emblem?

My first D was a "late 81" VIN 6530 with a build of Oct or Nov 81. It
was
an automatic and had the "dead" pedal. My 83 does as well.

Subject: Re: DML: De Lorean Midatlantic Annual Spring Social
To all members of the Midatlantic Region,
Mr. Aldo Buono, good administrating of the event, and good report on the
event.
I would like to take the time at this point to thank everyone for a good
time
during the event.
I want to give personal THANKS especially to Mr. Ron Finelli who was kind
enough to towed me and to GIVE me his accelerator cable that he has taken
from
his Delorean.
I was stuck on the road about seven blocks to his home.
I also want to THANK Mr. Rob Grady of P.J. Grady Inc., who was kind enough
to
install the cable for me, at no charge!
THANK YOU BOTH RON and ROB. This is unusual from a commercial and
professional positions, since this is their livelihood. Without these two
gentlemen's help, I guess I would not get back home to NYC at that day, let
along all the hassle to follow afterwards to get my Delorean back on the
road.
The snapping of the accelerator cable was just one of those fluke situation.
Since I do drive my Delorean daily, I do keep my car right up to par with no
expense spared. With all my cars that I own or collected, my motto is:
"when
in doubt, take it out." Rob said it was unusual for the way the cable to
have
snapped. It was worn clean to a taper. Usually there will be signs of
binding to indicate that the cable "IS GOING." With my luck, it just had to
be me, that day, that way! No signs at that time for the failure.
Folks, CHECK your cable for "fraying" at the cable end to accelerator
linkage
connection. Don't get stuck for simple things! It is right in front of you
when you open the hood. If it looks fray or thin, change it. It is not an
expensive item, and will save a lot of headaches a grief. Simple thing.
Anyway, the event and the meeting was enjoyable with good people attending
the
Midatlantic Region. There was a front end and door struts check by Mr. Rob
Grady which I missed because of my incident. I don't think I have troubles
at
these areas anyway, since Rob do service my Delorean, periodically.
There was a club member's meeting with a discussion of the club's
operations,
and other points of interest. Mr. Michael Pack show a video of an interview
with Mr. John Z. Delorean.
Mr. Ron Finelli and his mother were both kind enough to host the meeting at
their home and to supply all the refreshments and food. Thank you Rob for
the
pizzas.
I guess this is the TRUE SPIRIT in a club and the members.
Again, THANKS to all the members of the Midatlantic Region.

Subject: DML: Rainbow DeLorean...
Hello, all!
I was looking through some old magazines I had from
across-the-
seas (mostly India), and in one of them I found a picture of a prime
minister
standing on a street. Not very special, but you can see the front part of a
right-hand drive DeLorean sitting on the road. From what I can tell, it
looks
to be in very bad condition, as one of the headights were broken, and it
appeared to be at an angle, which suggested a flat tire.
The interesting detail, was that it was painted in a "rainbow"
of colors, all in a wavy format.
Since my scanner is currently malfunctioning, I will try to
get
it scanned at a friend's house, and then I'll post it on my webpage.
Stay Tuned!

He explained that he puts pressure in to the cylinder, and measures the
loss. The loss was 80% on one of the cylinders (#5 maybe?) He did
mention that it was one of the first ones he checked, so I dont know if
he checked any of the other cylinders.
The engine runs pretty much the same as when I purchased it. When I
change the oil, I have never noticed anything strange about it. Yea, its
kinda dark, but all used oil is... no?
I did notice that when I remove the PCV canister from the valve cover,
there is a significant amount of air being pushed out of there.. I did
not think it was strange, because I had no means of comparison.
Either way, The engine seems to run well otherwise. No strange noises
that I have noticed.
I do have a older style compression checker. What is the compression
supposed to be? Maybe I will tinker this weekend.

Subject: DML: Birmingham show
Hi all,
I will be writing a report of the Birmingham classic car show we had
over this last weekend when I have a bit more time. One thing I wanted
to write asap was regarding a thread I started ages ago about re-gassing
door struts. I found out some more details about this, and it ISN't a
service offered my many places, but it certainly can be done.
There is a place in London where every owner at the show had had their
struts re-gassed at some point. Working at an ex-rate of $1.69 to the
pound, I'll take care of a pair of struts, including shipping for $100.
This really works - even to the point of the doors being a little too
energetic on one of the cars we had on the stand :-) (it was warm in the
Exhibition Centre)
Anyone interested?
Martin

Its not "permanently" sealed, but the screw to remove the
motor mech is located behind the glass, which is glued
on. You can be very very careful and remove the glass.
seems to help if it is warm.

Subject: Re: DML: Gas Mileage on Turbo
Home now, and just started the car up. There is something coming out of
the oil passages (dip stick, and PCV) At first it kinda looks and smells
like gas vapor, but it is more likely rich exhaust fumes. The strange
part is that the temperature seems a lot colder than the exhaust from
the tail pipes. This is most likley due to bad rings, but it could also
be a bad head gasket, or a bad seal in one of the turbo housings. Or,
is this supposed to happen?! :)
Rob and I had the discussion about what the problem, and the results of
letting it go. Because the Delorean uses a cylinder sleeve that needs
to be replaced with the rings anyway, further damage is unlikely if I
continue to drive it this way. Even if the rings are snapped, they are
only going to damage the sleeves that are being replaced anyway (when I
do get it fixed)
I have been considering doing the job myself. I Have done major engine
work before, and the use of sleeves eliminates the need for a machine
shop to hone the cylinders. I looked through the service manual, and
noticed some strange procedures. Such as the Head installation
procedure. All engines I have worked on have a torque sequence, and
specification. The DMC has some kind of special tool they show that is
used to set the angle of the bolt?! Could someone explain this to me?
I just can't even picture what they want done, or even the purpose....
Maybe this procedure is instead of using a torque wrench?!
Either way, I am going to try to make it to Ohio as is.. I hope to
caravan with someone! (like anyone would want to now!!) I plan on
leaving Thursday PM, and sleeping in western PA the first night. I'd
like to make a quick stop in eastern Ohio Friday AM (for another one of
my hobbies) and then go to the R&R hall of fame Friday afternoon before
the dinner.

Sorry to bring back a old thread, but...
Did anyone on the Peugeot list talk about compatibility with the new
crysler that we have heard uses the same block?
Heck.. With my engine problems, maybe I will but a wrecked Crysler (the
comercial said they get 200HP from the 2.7L, I guess this is the PRV
grandson) and drop that in!
Thanks,
