Another D in Dry dock.
Last week on returning from doing some around town errands, just at my
driveway I lost all clutch peddle and could not disengaged the
transmission...actually I pulled it in to "N" and pushed it up the drive
and to bed in it's garage.
Although I managed to run over my self with the car I was driving (slipped
while pushing, D rolled back catching my heel with the rear tire and
trapping me on my back legs crossed holding on to door strap). A situation
where upper body mass can help a lot when you are alone.
Any way I have not done more than checked the fluid level in the hydraulic
reservoir, which is empty.......

In replacing the coil in the distributor I discovered that I was missing
(or lost during the surgery) one of the 2 centrifical advance weight
return springs. The Bosch technical support line (888/667-1042) informed
me that they do not sell replacement springs individually or in a kit.
Does anyone have or know where to get these springs?

Subject: DML:Alternator
A friend and I were looking under the car for the first time, and we
noticed for the first time that My DMC has 2 Alternators (both connected).
The old one is mounted on the top left the the engine, like it shows in
the
manual, and the motorola alternator is in the lower right. I dont know
too
much about my DMC, I do know that Dave Baurle serviced it when it was in
the hands of the previous owner. Another thing I have noticed is when I
have the fans on, the old alternator has a little plate in the very back
of
it the turns and stops and turns and stops( the belt is always moving).
When it stops it makes a rather loud clucking sound. Just wondering if I
could fixe this some how.

Although having an early model low mileage D may seen like they way to
go, If
Rob has not worked on it yet and put in many of the improvemennts that a
factory delorean needs (window moters, electrical work, etc.) you will
find
that you will be making many trips to Long Island. 8 years ago when I was
looking at the cars, I decide to spend a little more money to get a car
that
Rob could vouch for that was in his lot. This was worth the piece of mind
because he had put some time into it to make it sellable for the last
owner.
D's are not a cheap date but they can be easier on you if of Rob already
put
some work into it.

Hallo DMCers,
Following my little "ding" last November to the driver's door/wings, I
have just bought a cheap wrecked Delorean in Louisiana for parts.
I'm trying to find a cheap way of shipping it to Fallbrook, CA. Does
anyone know how I can do this in the States? The main car transporters
charge about $1500 (which is half the value of the wreck!). U-haul (or
similar) would probably be cheapest but means I would have to travel to
the States, etc... Anyone know how I can get in contact with empty
lorries/trucks returning to CA which might work out cheaper?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

If anyone is interested, I saw three "Ds" for sale over the weekend. One
is
here in Nashville, Vin#10246 Blue in color, manual, with about 8,000
miles on
it. $8,500. I question the miles, but it did have the original NCT tires
on
the back. I believe it's been in a wreck, the driver's side door does not
line
up correctly when closed. Also the paint on the rear quarter panel does
not
exactly match the door. The interior is in fair condition grey and black
in
color. If anyone wants anymore info. let me know. The other two I saw
when I
dropped my car off at DMCJOE's this weekend, I thought Vin#4398 was in
great
condition. Only 26k miles and Joe has the body and engine where you could
eat
off of it. You could spend about $1,500 and have a really nice car. The
other
"D" vin#3854 63K I didn't get to see as well (it was raining)$19,900.
Remember
the cars at Joe's are on Consignment the owner's have set the price. If it
were me looking for a "D", I'd definitely consider vin#4398($16,500).

You have a master or slave cylinder failure, it is probably the

Over the past few weeks, I have been installing many new brake parts. =
The reason for doing this is that the brake system seemed to only work =
at about 80% of what it should be capable of and I could never lock up =
the wheels in an emergency on dry pavement. Anyway, I went all out =
(almost) and purchased the Stainless Lines (excellent except they did =
not match up with the cars original nut shroud), cross drilled rotors, =
Axxis pads, a 4 wheel caliper seal kit, and some DOT4 Castrol brake =
fluid. In cleaning the caliper cylinders, I found a pile of yuk in each =
one as well as in the passage between the two cylinders (this probably =
explains the poor brake performance). Once I removed all of the air =
from the system, the brakes seem to operate as if there is still a large =
amount of air there. I reblead the system about 3 or 4 more times =
thinking that maybe I did not get all of the air out. At this point it =
seems like there cannot be anymore air there.
My question is: is there something I am overlooking (maybe the master =
died) or not doing right? I am not sure what to do next, and I am =
needing it to be driveable very soon now.

Cecil, I bought some of this Valvoline Synthetic Brake fluid. It says
that
"it is for all brake systems and that it mixes with conventional brake
fluids." So, I am convinced.
What I do not believe is that Dot 3 brake fluid damages the seals and
causes leaks. There is so little difference, only in boiling points,
that it
makes no sense that Dot 3 damages the rubber parts in high performance
cars.
Audi and Mercedes dealers sell a very expensive power steering fluid and
people say that to use something else causes the rubber seals to go bad.
I
asked many people about this and only found word of mouth rumors. I used
the
regular power steering fluid for years with no damage. People like to
sell
expensive things with fear of damage if you buy something for less. And
few
people stop to thing about what is really in a bottle. Think how many
millions of bottles of Marvil Mystery Oil have been sold. It does not
tell
what it is. It is about the same as transmission fluid. So that is my
long

Joe,
The device that is mounted on the drivers side is not an alternator it is
your air conditioner compressor. The pulley (plate) that you notice
clicking
on and off with your cooling fans is the AC compressor clutch cycling on
and off. You will notice this action only when the AC is switched on. You
only have one alternator and that is on the passenger side of the engine.

That "old alternator" your talking about is most likely the air
conditioning
compressor. If it is turning and stopping very frequently, you need more
freon.

Joe, this is easy. The "one on the top left" is your air conditioner
compressor. It does look some like an alternator. And the part that
clinks on is the clutch which turns the compressor on and off. So you
have no

GOD YES!! It appears that people today don't really understand the
market that John DeLorean was aiming for when he came out with his car.
I
can sympathize though, because an "ethical" sports car market is a tough
market to define. If I were to choose a car that fit it, it would have
to be
the DeLorean, as no other car even comes close! It has all the right
features for an average bachelor; Sleek styling, (not bulbous and
jelly-bean
like, like today's cars) moderately powerful engine, but not too powerful,
comfortable interior, moderate price range, (at least originally planned
that
way) plus it added an identity with the stainless steel and logo that fit
the
market's preferences perfectly. (or at least mine!) The trouble is people
see it and they think "exotic" when they should think "normal car,
designed
correctly". Of course the exotic perception certainly doesn't hurt the
car,
until the people in question find out how powerful it is, and assume it's
just a weak attempt at some kind of super car.
Anyhow, that's how I see it.

The March '99 issue of Classic Cars (a UK publication) lists the DMC as
a car "lurking in the classic car shadows."
Shown in a subgroup, "Great but... Infamous," is a full page color shot
of a D head on during a power turn on a track.
A rear corner shot shows a detail of the rear tail lights. If anyone
knows, did the Euro-D's have a different tail light
assembly? The ones in the photo are a raised square block style not the
flush style I've seen.
The article reads favorably for the D once you get past the complaint of
the wasted taxpayers money. Excerpts: "What he [JZD] did
was build a car much better than its reputation would have you believe"
and, "you can do worse than buy one. It will be fun,
maverick and usable, with bucketloads of kudos from a troubled past and
association with that lovable rouge its creator."

That isn't really the case. The brake fluids all have different chemical
compositions. The silicone-based fluid is especially different. It hates
water, unlike DOT 3/DOT 4 which absorbs it like mad, and can be absorbed
by seals where regular fluids cannot. When you take the silicone back out
of the system, then the seals can leak their retained silicone out, then
shrivel up. This will cause you to need new seals. My belief is that one
should try not to change brake fluid grades very often because of these
differences in composition, especially between silicone and conventional.
DOT4 is about like DOT3 except with higher boiling point (maybe you don't
drive on the track, but it can't hurt) and better lubrication properties.
It is the lubrication you care about. DOT5 has even better lubrication
yet as silicone is pretty slippery stuff whereas glycol ethers aren't
really.
I don't know anything about the new synthetic fluid. It ought to be
printed on the bottle what fluid it is interchangeable with.
Unfortunately only the Army really uses silicone fluid any more. So it is
very expensive. Myself, I would feel comfortable using regular old DOT4
fluid, synthetic or otherwise, however if you have silicone in the system
already I would not change that.
Besides, do you really want to scrimp on your brakes? If your brakes fail
unexpectedly, you can wreck your car and possibly injure yourself. Don't
do that.

As far as funny comments being asked about my car. I recall a woman
being in
total shock to see a Delorean pull up next to her at a gas station. She
asked me how I got a car which was only made for a movie. She was under
the
impression that the Delorean was only built for the BTTF films. I also
had
someone ask me how it felt to be one of a hundred owners to have a
Delorean.
I informed him kindly that there were over eight thousand Deloreans built,
but he didn't believe me. I don't know what it takes to convince people
these days.

I know what you mean. It seems like whenever we drive our DeLorean
somewhere we always get comments from misinformed people. Examples:
"You know, there are only 12 of these." (Must get it from DMC-12)
"Hey, that thing will do like 240, right?"
"I like it's body, brushed aluminum."
"It must suck parking it, 'cause the doors swing out so far."
"I can't believe you spent $300,000 on that car!"
And we VERY frequently have people that don't believe us that it has a
V6 with 135 hp (well, ok, we have 225 hp with the turbos :)). I guess it
must look like a supercar to them. The thing that annoys me the most is
that no one EVER believes us when we state facts about the car. One
example of this would be:
"It has a helicopter engine!"
Me:"Uh, no it doesn't."
*Open up engine compartment*
"See, helicopter engine!"
Me:"I give up!" :)

I would have to agree about only using the specified brake fluid
for your car. The results of using a lower DOT rating or silicone
fluid in a system not designed for it could spell for disasterous
results and or costly brake system repairs. Never use a silicone based
brake fluid unless specifically called for by the manufacturer and
DeLorean's were not built with silicone brake fluid in mind. Use DOT 4
for best results, though I believe "D's" came with DOT 3. This is okay
for example because you are simply upgrading your fluid. Not going
backwards. As far as synthetic brake fluid goes. Use it! I only use
synthetic brake fluid in all my cars, street and race. The only way to
go for the best brake fluid out there is Neo "Super DOT" synthetic
brake fluid. It is meant for DOT 3 and 4 applications, and far exceeds
all DOT 3, 4, and 5(silicone) for that matter requirements. Sure it is
obviously more expensive than ordinary brake fluid. But the results
are worth it. Neo "Super DOT" out performs names like; AP600, Cartel,
Ferodo, Valvoline, Motul, Seiken, and Castrol to name a few. This is
not an advertisement for Neo, just an exstatic customer trying to pass
on the good word. I have used Neo for years now in my street cars and
NASCAR race cars. Sure you never need that much performance from a
brake fluid on the street, but for me, it's piece of mind. Knowing
that it is there if you need it. They also carry a full line of
synthetic motor oils, greases, lubes, etc. It is the best stuff i have
ever seen or used and recomend it to anybody. For more info on all of

But again only use what is pecified for your car. Silicone is not
designed for your car, it is mainly used on modern motorcycles. Due to
it's completely different chemical composition shoulod not be used

Old time magazines and newspapers are you best source. Time magazine,
november 1, 1982, is good, as are several others (try buying them from
ebay.com). You can also order the complete trial transcripts from
netcourt.com. I recently had a meeting with Gerald Scotti, the DEA agent
who was one of the people in charge of the arrest, and ultimately the guy
who came to DeLorean's aid and became his key defense witness. It was
quite
an interesting meeting, and will really help the movie I'm producing.

I love hearing other peoples comments that they've gotten about their
cars. Very entertaining and interesting to hear.
The common comments I get are:
1. 'I bet parts are hard/impossible to find and super expensive?' -
thus followed by the well-known speech of how our cars rely on fairly
common mechanical components that can be found fairly easily. I
always throw in for good measure, that the car does have its odd
parts - like the angle drive speedometer mechanism that I've had the
joy of replacing to the tune of a few hundred dollars...
2. 'Wow, that car looks like it costs at least $40K to $50K! How did
you get one?' - thus followed by a very large grin and a silent
chuckle at purchasing mine for $10K. The car looks exotic so people
think exotic car prices. This comment is also tied in with #3...
3. 'Incredible! I've never seen one of these up close before. There
were only like a hundred made right?' We all know the correct
response to this one...
Other frequent things I've heard are:
'Weren't those made by Ford?' Ummmm- not even close.
'Weren't those made by GMC- that's what it says on the front right?'
'Hey, these were custom designed to carry/transport drugs (cocaine)
right?'
'DeLorean...Hmmmm, he's still in jail isn't he?'
'Isn't that car like really slow/heavy and underpowered?'
Numerous 'Back to the Future' comments that I won't even get into...
Nobody believes the car is really 18 years old...
Some people ask me how I clean it. I ask them how they would clean a
stainless steel kitchen sink.
Think that's about it. I hope you all enjoy the comments and as I
make more and more trips to the gas station I'll keep you posted on
the real entertaining ones I get (still waiting for warmer weather...)

I too have run across people who have never seen a Delorean in person,
and somehow
remembered only enough of the 80's to think that the DMC is a movie prop.
I've
also had the car misidentified as almost every other exotic, with the
Lamborghini
being the most popular answer.
I've noticed that the uninitiated seem to think it has much more power
than it
actually has, although I can understand that...it looks "powerful". And
when people
tell me it's worth $100,000, I offer to sell it to them at half-price.
I did have someone in a parking lot recently warn me about the
"well-known defect"
of the doors spontaneously popping open. I thanked him and kept walking.

I am intending to do just such a conversion though probably not before
next year. :( A 13B conversion could probably reach about 250HP without
going berserk about it or about 150-160 in a "maximum efficiency"
configuration, and a 20B should easily manage 400-450HP which is plenty
fast enough for me.
The Wankel has a light weight and small size which makes it ideal for the
DeLorean (or anything else for that matter really).
However, it has a totally different power curve from the PRV and you
should count on changing at minimum your final drive transmission ratio to
really get good performance. The wankel engine doesn't even really get
spooled up until 3500-4000 RPM and peaks at about 6500-7000; the PRV has
buckets of low-end torque (for a V6) and peaks at... 5200? something like
that.
I know it is pretty straightforward to mate the 13B to the DeLorean
5-speed. Someone connected a 12A and the 13B has the same connecting
hardware. (so does the 20B but you don't want to use that with the
DeLorean transmission). Mazda has a new naturally-aspirated 13B which
makes 250HP using some sort of funky port system, kind of like VTEC for a
wankel. dunno if you could get one, but it would be worth considering.
If you were to use a 20B, you have a number of additional problems.
First off, 20B's don't grow on trees, you have to have them specially
imported, and they cost a lot. Less than some people think, but a lot.
Expect to have $7,000 to $10,000 invested in the engine by the time you're
done, figure $4,000 for the block, $2,500 for the fuel system, and another
$1,500 to $5,000 for turbo/superchargers. Not even counting mounting
hardware or any of that.
You are going to have to swap transmissions too. The DeLorean 5-speed
will fly into pieces much above 250-300HP. The 20B puts out 400+ HP so
you have to find a transmission that will work. You can get an automatic
from a big FWD car, or use a Porsche, probably an early-90's 911 5-speed.
The 6-speeds they use now are much weaker and the old 4-speeds are, well,
4-speeds. :} I haven't thought of any other transmissions which would
really fit the bill; if you think of any that're cheaper than a Porsche,
let me know. :} Of course, swapping transmissions means you have to have
axles made at a machine shop. You'll get to change the final drive ratio
here, too.
Rear-mounted engines are really cool, but... well, sometimes, they're
annoying.
Finally, you're probably looking at some sort of structural upgrades to
keep the engine from coming out the air intake. PermaFrame comes to mind,
or you can weld. One is cheap and requires skill; one is nifty and
requires money.
Finally, the wankels like to have forced-air induction. A naturally
aspirated, tuned and ported 20B might make 350HP in a pinch, but probably
won't be much cheaper than the turbo route (though it may last longer). I
would recommend a low-pressure supercharger in the 6-8lbs of boost range.
This is about half the stock pressure and ought to allow you to get away
without intercoolers.
Finally, there's the matter of making it all fit. I've never seen a 20B
in person and so don't really know whether it would be too long. I doubt
it's longer than the GM V6's that have been put in, but I don't know for
sure. Fitting a new transmission in without having to cut up the body is
another concern.
Now, you get to do all those other things that go along with a real
supercar conversion. Lower the car (front at least), probably plus size
the tires (front at least again), better brakes, oh, and don't forget to
cover the car with as many stickers as you can find. ;)
So my opinion is that the 20B conversion would be lots more... fun, but
would also net you about a 50% increase in power and would probably, given
the DeLorean's light weight, handling (especially if lowered), and good
aerodynamics, put you solidly in ferrari territory. All for the low, low
price of... what, about $40K and 6 mo. minimum labor? :}
