Setting up a HALON system in an engine bay is safe and easily done. I would strongly advise against doing it for the passenger compartment however. The warning is correct HALON removes oxygen from the ambiant air and will suffocate the driver. HALON is also MUCH heavier than air, simply opening the doors would clear the car in seconds. For just the engine compartment you can obtain a standard sized bottle from half a dozen racing companies. Install 2 nozzles in the engine compartment, mount the bottle similar to the battery (behind the seat), and setup a pull-cable to the dash. When you tank the t-bar, the bottle empties into the engine bay.

This would put out just about any fire in the engine bay, and not leave any mess.

For use IN the car, I would reccomend CO-2, get a 10-pounder on a quicklatch mount. It will also displace oxygen, but it's not nearly as hazardous as HALON. Besides, with CO2 frostbite would be a bigger worry :)

In my experiance we had a halon system throughout the whole car with one nozzle aimed at my feet shooting up my legs, and one in the engine bay. But that was OPEN COCKPIT Formula cars. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I've had a bit of a hassle with the folks at the 800 number telling me no two-double-beds rooms were available for the show (~$60/night), and they booked me for a two-king-beds room (~$120).

After talking to Ken though, I found that this was not actually the case.  There should be more of the $60 rooms available, but you may have to push them a bit to get them to reserve one for you.  Even if you tell them that you're with the show, it seems that they aren't looking in our block for open rooms. Get a supervisor on the line if you need to (said the supervisor I talked to) when you're making the reservations.

Subject: stalling, power loss, and crazy gagues

Hello list,
I just got in from driving my D for the first time in a week and she is acting up. When I first started it, I noticed it was idling extremely low... around 500 RPM. When I went to drive, it had a serious lack of power, and would just sputter when I gave it more than 1/4 throttle or so. This got better when I got it out on the highway, and it ran for a little bit. Unfortunately When I pull up to stop signs it stalls every time. The voltage gague is going up and down from 10.6-13.0 (I have a dakota digital dash).

Just for some background, we replaced several coolent hoses last weekend on the car... one which was on the left side of the engine towards the transmission (the others were the ones underneath the car half under the "belly pan"). We had to replace the voltage regulator within the last month or so also. I'm thinking maybe I knocked something loose last weekend while we were changing the hoses. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

HI,
I took my injectors to a Diesel injection shop.  They cleaned and bead
blasted all 6 injectors for $50.00.  You may want to look into that.  Just
don't tell them that they are for a DeLorean or they will run away....

Thought I'd try to help with numbers...

I measured 140db from my header because no one wants to put a muffler on
it.
I also measured about 4 seconds of smoke in the eyes before all vision is
lost.

Is that enough numbers?

Also- I was just down at Skips' exhaust in Plaistow, NH, he said someone
had just stopped by with a D, wanted to know if you were on the list..

that's all.  If I get any more numbers, I will post.

I hate to be a party-pooper, but other than being able to post pictures of
our cars, just what does this new website offer that the DML (and
dmcnews.com) doesn't already have?  I think I speak for alot of people here
when I say that I really don't see the need for Yet Another Delorean Site
(tm) to talk about our cars.

YES, there is a way to clean and test the fuel injectors. It does
require a fuel injector tester. You can send the injectors out to one
of the Delorean venders or maybe a local Volvo dealer has one and can
do them for you. It shouldn't be very expensive as it only takes 2-3
minuetes per injector. When done properly you can get a very nice
pattern and all of the injectors should test within 5% of each other
so your engine can idle smoothly.

Pull a spark plug wire and see if you are getting a nice blue spark.
In the event you aren't two common things to check are the connections
on the ballast resistors, (those white things on the firewall on the
left side) and the pick-up coil in the distributer. If you have a nice
spark then the problem is fuel related but since you can smell fuel I
think the engine is getting fuel it just isn't "lighting it off".

Louie - Is it possible that you disconnected or disturbed a ground
somewhere during the coolant hose change?  There is a major ground
point around one of the transmission brackets.  If your ground is
intermittent, this could lead to all manner of bizarre behavior.

There is a franchised company called Dr. Injector, that specializes in
cleaning and maintenance of fuel injectors.  I got a quote from them
on my D ... all injectors rebuilt for $25 each.  They can also do a
simple ultrasonic cleaning in a machine specifically designed for it.
I don't know if you have a franchise in your location, but a quick

<SNIP>

Open the doors?! What happens while driving down the highway?  The windows
won't cut it!  I still just don't see the need for halon in a DeLorean.
This is like shooting down a guard with an ATOM bomb.  The problem you are
creating greatly outweighs the problem you are solving.  You are trading
fire safety for potential driver blackout.  Even if there is absolutely no
passageway to the cockpit from the engine compartment,  fires and
detonations can change that quick, fast, and in a hurry.  Besides, if a fire
or even an explosion did occur, the damage has already been done and putting
your conciseness at risk is ('scuse the pun) senseless.  Co2 or nitrogen
will work just as effectively and still allow you to breath.  Co2 can be
displaced with O2, but halon will simply eat it up.  Halon is great
technology for racing, aircraft, some boats, and the defense department.
Using it in ordinary automobiles is simply ridiculous overkill.  Why do you
think luxury and exotic cars don't even use them?!  Be safe, and keep
driving stainless.

-Mike A.

P.S.- Yes, I always just tell it like it is.

Erik - I don't know how you are progressing with your problem, but I
thought that I would share an experience that I had with Winged1.  I
had done a complete tune-up with all new parts (cap, rotor, wires,
plugs, and replaced the air filter element with a K&N unit), and had
about 500 trouble-free miles on the parts.  Suddenly, I developed a
miss at certain RPM's, and a rough idle.  My gas mileage dropped off
appreciably.  Naturally, this all started to unravel in the middle of
a long-distance rally with the PNDC.  Power was way down, which is a
bad thing for me.  To make a long story a little shorter, one of the
plug wires had somehow come unplugged from the cap, and was just
sitting there, making an arcing contact occasionally.  I plugged the
wire in firmly, and all symptoms ceased.  Of course, this required
removal of the intake to get to the distributor to refit the wire, but
I don't think that the intake had anything to do with the problem.

Louie, When you turn the key to the 2nd position, does the battery light come
on. If not, replace the bulb. Then up your idle to about 950. If all this
fails, you may need an alternator. The car runs on the alternator, if you
still have one of the motorola's or ducy's, thast could be most of your
problem. Also check the battery with a DMM for 12.66 volts in the morning. If
it's lower, you have a battery that not fully charged.

Subject: On Alternators

After 21 years of faithful service, my DeLorean no longer uses a Ducey
alternator.  The Ducey was a faithful servant to the end, never once
giving out, even under the heaviest of loads.

She is gone only because driving around Memphis was too uncomfortable.
With the headlights and AC operating in slow traffic, the Ducey
just couldn't spare the amps for little things like turn signals and
windshield wipers.  Even with the idle set intentionally high, illuminating my
brake lights was sometimes a struggle.

So while we were in Memphis, John Hervey of Special T Auto sold me one of
his big 150 amp alternators.  He even found the time to install it for me
on Saturday morning.

It made quite a difference!

Not only did my new alternator perform well on the long ride back to
Cleveland, this week it has been marvelous in city traffic.  I believe
this surplus of electricity has improved both the comfort and safety of my
DeLorean considerably.

I still have the original Ducey, and I may go back to it someday,
especially if I ever compete in Concours.  After so many years I know that
it is possible to live with the Ducey indefinitely, but the change is
refreshing.

Thank you very much John Hervey.
