Talk to Dan (DanRC30, on this list) he had replaced his rims with
aftermarket ones. He custom made some spacers to fit behind the rims
so that they fit perfectly on the car.

I have to agree.....car detailing is by far the easiest thing to
do...diagnosing a problem is complicated. Any place that says it's
one part, replaces it and then comes back to say that wasn't it but
they think it's another part is not a good mechanic...they are doing
what any non-mechanic person would do.....change all the parts until
it works. A good mechanic diagnoses the problem...pinpoints it to a
specific part that is causing it, replaces it and has it fixed the
first time. The shop probably got to comfortable with Andrew agreeing
to all the repairs they probably figured "What the hell.... we'll do
one more thing to see if it works he's said yes to everything else".
Replacing a clutch is a no brainier with the right tools....you know
the clutch is worn out so there is no guessing what part is bad and
if you have a lift with a tranny jack...your in business.

The July issue of Classic and Thoroughbred cars has an extensive article
on the car.
When I was in Switzerland & Germany I made an appointment with the
Mercedes History Museum to see the four or five that they have. They let me
see one. The rest were unavailable.
I explained to the engineer that I have a DeLorean. My PR rep., said the
engineers at MB during the DMC saga say that JZD & Co. copied the C111
concept.
He then went on to point out some of the styling & engineering, general
timeframe, marketing similarities, etc., etc. There are several obvious
similarites in my opinion.
However when I asked him why he knew so much about the DeLorean
automobile, the informal tour was immediately over!

any repair facility make sure both sides understand any expectations
or limitations of any repair. If you want parts back, say that, if

I don't want to beat this subject up more than it needs to be, but once
again I need to add a comment or two in response to this recent Paradise
subject. I don't just take my car to his shop to get a steam clean done to
my undercarriage. If you go back to my site and check my maintenance
section for the last four years, you can see the variety of work he has done
on my car. He has removed my transmission before, valve covers, dashboard,
muffler, crossover pipe, and many other mechanical parts of the DeLorean,
and he has put back everything in the correct place, in complete working
order, without harming other parts of the car. I have been given all my old
parts back, and the car improves with every visit. And if anyone knows me,
I love cleanliness, so I request cosmetic work that most other shops won't
do. But like I said, he is a specialty/restoration place, not just a
regular shop.
And by the way, he has installed many twin-turbos on DeLoreans in the past.
He is even listed in the old/recent DeLorean World magazines as one of the
certified places in the US to get this kind of work done. The man and his
shop can do it all, make no doubt of that. Like I said before though, I
have no information on Andrew's specific case, I am only speaking from the
more than half a dozen times I have had my car at Paradise.

I've decided to yet again bring up the whole insurance deal- I'm trying
to get rid of progressive because I just can't bear paying them for the
very short amount of time I actually spend IN my car... So I remembered
that classic/collector car insurance has better rates, even with a few
restrictions. I've looked at a few, but it seems that the one's I've
looked at require that my 'collector' car needs to be garaged most of the
time. Unfortunately, I don't have one readily accessible to me...
Its not like my car is going to rust outside, right? :)
Does anyone know of a collector insurance company that doesn't have
strict garaging requirements?

hey all,
i have a problem with my engine temp gauge - in that it doesn't work!
i have posted before about the problem, and here is the latest on the
situation - i've done everything that everyone has suggested -
anyway, my temp gauge is stuck at the first tick. it will not go up or down,
and it won't move when you put the key in the ignition. it just says there.
i replaced the temp sending unit - no luck. i tried hitting the dash a
little bit, didn't drop down. i used a paperclip to knock the needle down. it
went down, but then when i put the key in the ignition, it went right back up
to where it was before!!!
anyone have a good idea on what the problem is? the last things to check are,
in my knowledge, replacing the gauge (last resort), or a wiring problem. is
there a way to bypass the stock wiring and just put a jumper between two
points to prove whether or not i have a wiring problem?

After 10 years of waiting I finally have it! I am VIN 3512. While the car as
a whole is better than I ever dreamed, this forum has been an excellent
service to me as I work out the minor bugs with the car.
I've been touching up the the paint on the side vents and I was wanting to
touch up the rims temporarily until I can get them blasted and repainted. I
was able to cross the satin black color to a PlastiKote spray color but I'm
a little wary of trying to guess on the rims. I found a cross to Ditzler,
but I don't know anyone who stocks it. Anybody had luck crossing to a more
accessible paint?

Hi Ralf, in all fairness, in the D engine compartment, and in virtually all
other engine compartments you will find liberal use of nylon ties. The D uses
quite a few, on mine, all are in great shape. Can't argue that stainless is
superior to nylon but not in cost, flexibility, nor in ease of installation.
I'm suggesting that everyone carry a nylon tie or two, they daisy chain, just
like hose clamps (with enough of them you can hold your windshield in place if
it falls off). All I'm suggesting is that you spend a quarter and throw a strap
in your car, JIC. My best afterthought, as mentioned, get two of the clips
(cost is $3.96 each), clip 'em both in place and enjoy how smart you are. (Or
get one of those big ugly hose clamps, grind it to fit, and mess up the beauty
and symmetry of your engine compartment). (Oops, should have left that line
out!)

I went to the rim-shop today to try to measure up the rims and to our
surprise there was a lot of info 'printed' on the inside of the
standard rim (even including production day). Hopefully this will make
it easier for them to find suitable rims.
We also talked about the spacers to make rims fit but they weren't too
enthousiastic about that. It is better (according to them) to make the
rim fit by adjusting the rim itself.
We'll see.

How can you be so sure that these are nylon wraps? Is it Nylon6? Is it
Nylon6.6? Is it glass fibre reinforced Nylon?
There are many different kinds of plastic materials. I assume that these
wraps in your engine compartment, that are still good and flexible after 20
years are simply not Nylon!
I for myself know why I don't use Nylon for outside applications. I use
plenty of them in inside applications (e.g. to bundle wires together for
better looks and tidiness). But I will never use them again for
applications that are exposed to weathering. I did this once and they failed
after 2 years, because they were exposed to sunlight.
Admittedly, the amount of sunlight in the D engine compartment isn't that
big, but... better be safe than sorry.
May anyone decide for himself.

You really can't tell there's a clamp in place unless you are
specificly looking for/at the otterstat. On the clamp I used, I
didn't bother grinding it down, I simply strapped it into place. I
reccomended grinding down the sides because it may be easier for some
than to bend the connectors on the otterstat. Stainless clamp, or tie-
wrap, the choice is yours. But in either case, I think many will
agree the best, safest solution is a wrap-around restraint for the
otterstat, rather than the clip put on at the factory.
The tie-wraps used on my car are all in good shape, I must admit. But
none are used in the same way as the clip on the otterstat is. The
tie-wrap would be pushing against the pressure of the coolant in the
pipe, not just holding 2 items together. But if the wrap is strong
enough, I see no reason why it wouldn't work. Me, I'll stick with

You wanna see 16" & 17" wheels? Well check out this link.
Click on the "scrap book" link, and then on "Dan D". That's my car, and I've
had them on for about a year now with no ill effects. (I did all the
conversions on my car myself.) And I drive my car. I guess I have about 8k
miles on those new wheels and tires. I've also pushed it pretty hard in the
turns too. No problems with clearance. The only thing I don't like is that
it seems very easy to make the Pirelli P7000ss tires squeal. Maybe it's just
me pushing the car hard in the turns, but I don't think so. I'll try another
brand once I wear these out :).

That's what I meant... I want to replace with 15" and 16" instead of
the standard 14" and 15". 16" and 17" might be an otion but I wonder
if there would be room for that and if that looks nice at all.
So far there is pretty little info on this subject. Probably because
not many people have their rims replaced. The only thing so far was
pointed out to me by a local owner:

However I'd love to know the offset values so that I can shop here
which would be more cost effective. Perhaps I'll give mr. Kay a call
to see what he is willing to share on this info.

For all of you that where following the "My tach is weird" saga, I bring you good news. I put in a new one and it works! Sometimes it really is the tach itself. And as far as my run in with the DMC1 guy about fixing my tach, I'm sure you can all guess where I'd like to stick my old tach.
