I've already spoken to Kevin, so we can all rest easy ;-) The best
pads to use are the coarser ones. I have some pics of the 'approved'
ones if anyone wants to compare before they go nuts re-graining. The
finer pads will have a tendency to smoothen, rather than preserve the
original graining, which is what makes it soooo nice!
I also picked up the rather expensive handle for the pads. It does
make life a little easier.

Ed,
Place several paper towels above and below the stained area and place a
weight over the toweled section for 24 hours. This process will absorb any
fluid soaked into the fibers. Follow up by applying Westley's Bleche-Wite
sprayed onto a clean wet towel. Scrub the area with a clean scrubbing brush,
use circular pattern when scrubbing, clean up with a clean damp cloth.
Repeat the process until the stain is gone.
Be sure to follow the Bleche-Wite safety precautions; this is a strong
product.

Subject: Re: idle problem
Idle quality can usually be reduced to one or a combination of the
following problems:
An imbalance in the ignition system ie: a bad wire or spark plug
A vacuum leak or a malfuntioning vacuum valve
A misfiring, leaky, dirty fuel injecter
Someone trying to set idle with the 3 brass adjusting screws.(They are
ALL supposed to be LIGHTLY seated closed)
A problem with the idle micro switch.
In general to improve idle quality if the motor hasn't been tuned up
in a long time it might be overdue for one. On our cars, most of which
don't accumulate significant mileage time ages components so even if
you only have 5000 miles since your last tuneup how many years has it
been? Also how old is the gas? Stale gas makes the motor stumble,
hesitate, backfire, hard cold start. Use up the tank as far as you can
and fill with fresh 91 octane and see if that makes any difference. If
you still have trouble then you might have to do a compression test
and valve adjustment. If all of the cylinders are not within 5% of
each other you cannot get a smooth idle.

Subject: "Delorean" - the book
I just finished reading "Delorean". My wife saw it at the library and
brought it home for me Thursday night. I read a few chapters that night, and
decided to read a few more tonight. I couldn't put it down; it's almost
3:00am, and I've finished the book.
I don't know what to say; I'm completely in shock. There has always been an
understanding in my mind that government corruption exists, but I am
absolutely shocked at what I just read. Right now, I would do anything for
John DeLorean. For anyone to have to go through what he went through.... I
just can't imagine it.
Not so many weeks ago, a link was posted to an EBay auction of a poster. The
poster was of a DeLorean with a big red "COKE" bumper sticker. If I recall
correctly, there was some indication that a few of us found this to be
humorous. I pray that I NEVER, EVER have to see anything like that on this
list again. For someone to find humor in that is appalling and disgusting,
and I use those words for lack of an appropriate 4 lettered replacement.
For those of you who have yet to read this book, I highly encourage you to
do so immediately. Pick up a copy at your local library, or buy one online.
There are a couple on EBay right now that can be had for around $10. I am
going to add this one to my permanent collection as a grim reminder of
exactly how our world works.

Andy, Why are you having to jump the rpm relay all the time. When the
ignition is turned on the pump will run for a second then when the
engine turnes over the pump will start up again. If it doesn't, you
may have a bad pulse coil.If your going to keep jumping it. Then just
swap two wires in the socket and it will stay on when ever the key is
turned on. I agree with DMCjoe about the brown hot wires and the fuse.

It's really hard to find someone in Northern California that will work
on our cars and actually knows what they are doing, or are at least are
willing to learn from one of the major suppliers. The closest shop to San
Francisco that we know of is:
Ace Automotive - 3407 Adeline Street - Berkeley, CA 94703 - 501 652-2272
They take care of at least 3 DeLoreans that we know of. We also have a
couple of other shops listed in our 'Links & Resources' section of our club
website:
Most of our members do their own work or send their cars to Southern
California for repairs.

Ever since I bought my D about 6 months ago, I noticed that the
speedometer consol's light seemed strangely dim. I haven't asked
or done anything about it since, but the other day while taking my
D out at night, I noticed that the light was suddenly BRIGHT after
starting the car up. It stayed that way (which I thought was cool,
but strange) for about 10-15 minutes, then it went dim again.
Do I have some sort of short somewhere? Did I move a nob to
adjust the brightness of the consol light? What is going on here?
As usual, thank you for your guy's great help in advance,

I have to say it again (because I feel this way, and also someone said

I understand where you're coming from Ryan.
I first read John's autobiography when I was 14, and I felt the same way.
How could everything that was so right go so wrong, and why did the
government have to target John for a sting. You have to remember that
at the time, Ronald Reagan had made the drug war a major priority,
and that John, because of his situation and celebrity, was an easy target
for FBI agents that were over zealous with very questionable ethics.
I have a copy of the "Coke" poster you mention, along with the Clint Clemens
print "Blizzard of the Eighties" hanging over my bed. It's unfortunate, but
most
of the posters put out after the trial in the mid-eighties only feature a
Delorean
with some lame joke about cocaine. I have the "Coke" poster rolled up in a
tube,
like most people on the list, if something has a Delorean in or on it, I end
up buying it.
I don't think people on the list found the poster humorous the way you
think.
I think it was probably meant to be in the spirit of "Oh great, another one
of those
dumb Delorean/cocaine posters from the mid eighties". Anyone that is
familiar
with John knows that he never had a single thing to do with cocaine.
I would be willing to guess about 95% of this list has already read his
book.
I was lucky enough to send my copy to John and have him sign it for me.
If you can locate his mailing address, he might do the same for you. If you
make it to the meet in Memphis in 2002, you might be able to get him to sign
it in person.
I've heard rumors he may be making an appearance.

Hello All,
I have ran into a problem today. I went out to start the DeLorean to take it out for
a drive but when I tried to start it it turned over maybe twice and then all electrical power
seemed to have died very suddenly. I now have no courtesy lights, no buzzer, no ignition,
and the gauges won't budge when you turn the key. Absolutely no power at all. Heres what
I checked: 1. Battery has full charge. 2. Cleaned up the ground wire connection that goes to
the frame under the coolant bottle. 3. Checked all fuses. 4. Pulled the relays to make sure that
one of the contacts hadn't pushed down or something.
This leads to another question. On my start inhibit relay there are 5 pins on the
relay itself but the socket only has 4 contacts in it. The middle contact isn't there. I took
out the whole section of sockets to see if there was a wire underneath that should go there but
there wasn't. My wiring doesn't look to be all butchered or anything so is there supposed to
be one there? Anyone have any ideas? Anything that I should double check?
Thanks in advance.........................Jason #5903

Hello John and others,
i have to jump the RPM relay to test my fuel pressure and other fuel related
problems. my car does not run. it will turn over and fire but it will not
start up. i do not have the luxury of having a car that is actually running
while i troubleshoot my problems!! the RPM relay is really the only way to
go , as long as i am by myself in my garage where i can't reach the ignition
from the fuel pump or the engine compartment.
also, i found the problem with my fuse block. what a stupid problem it was.
i found that a previous owner had jumped fuse 7 out of the block on a fused
jumper, and the fuse that was in there was a dummy just to have in there. i
found the fuse holder for # 7 and sure enough, it was blown! replaced it and
things work just fine again.
i should have known it was jumped!

On the center console, in front of your shifter/gear selector is the
rheostat to control the brightness of the binnacle lights. Try
rotating the knob to see if that will brighten the lights. If not,
you might have a bad dimmer switch.
Since I always keep the lamps at their brightest, I bypassed the
dimmer, and hard wired everything together. While the lights are not
blinding, the are brighter, and much clearer.

Subject: [DML] Speedo. light problems...
As usual, thank you for your guy's great help in advance,
Richard

Subject: Re: Help! Idle problems - Microswitch - Loose wires!
Stian, When the engine is cold, the Lambda system for gas mixture is
on manual and sending 80/20 signal to the FV to run a certain
mixture. When things start to heat up, the the sensors start to back
off, then the 02 sensor takes over and sends the voltage to the
Lambda to adjust the air/gas mixture. If the air flow is not adjusted
correctly for the age of the 02 sensor or new 02, then the car is
( Seeking ). Meaning the 02/lambda is looking for the right mixture.
Thus your idle goes up and down. Adjust the air flow meter with a 3mm
long handle allen wrench. Just do a 1/4 turn either direction when
the engine is hot and see what happens. This should be done with a
exhaust analyzer for the correct setting, but the manual may get you
by.
As far as the two wires loose on top of the engine, more than likley
they are the wires fron the micro switch which turns the idle spped
motor on. Black is common normally goes to the center terminal and
black/green to the upper terminal.
With out more specific information, there are two many wires in the
relay compartment to speculiate on where it goes.
What Mike said about the coil is true. Coils do get weak and create
over time a higher resistance and should be replaced ever so often. As
I say on my web site: If you want a little pick me up, the coil can
do it.

Klaus, As I said in an earlier post. Adjust the air flow with the 3mm
allen wrench. This will stop it from seeking and level out the idle.
Again: It should be done with an exhause analyzer.

Measure voltage drop across every connection till you find the one
that is causing your problem. The battery could be the problem, I
have seen fully charged batteries that as soon as you put a load on
them it is like a connection inside the battery is broken. Load test
the battery or just try jumping the car with another while you try to
start it.Or just try another battery. There is nothing special about
troubleshooting this problem in the electrical system in the Delorean
as opposed to any other automobile. Don't get thrown off by the
unusual locations of the components, it still works like any other
car. I wouldn't touch the inhibit relay till you can keep the power up
in the car. If the inhibit relay was the source of the problem it
would have no effect on the gauges, courtesy lights, or buzzer.

Since you have found the source of your problem with the #7 fuse and
it is the result of someone's previous unprofessional repair we can
assume that you may have a similar situation in the fuel system. Take
nothing for granted. Hoses may or may not be connected or connected
correctly. Trace each hose to it's source and verify routing and
condition. This may be an old problem that was never corrected and the
car ran although not correctly. It is easy to mix up hoses on the fuel
distributer if you are not careful so start there. In diagnosing a
problem you have to assume many things. In your case it will be unwise
to take anything for granted now. There is a tee connection in the
return line, that is a good place to start tracing the return lines to
make sure that it is connected and working. Using 2-1-0 in the parts
manual verify the entire return line from fuel regulater to tank.

The full throttle micro switch should be connected to the plug with the
green wire and black wire. The other plug with a green with green strip and
a black wire should not be connected on a car with a manual transmission.
Tie this set of wires back so they will not interfere with the throttle
linkage.

For a good reference on how to connect the hoses to the fuel distributor,
check http://www.dmcnews.com/Techsection/fuelhoses.htm . This is a good
diagram that Nick Pitello posted.
