In this months issue of the mens mag. Maxim there is an article on super
cars and it has a funny little reference to JZD. In the article it has pic
of a guy holding two huge money bags and next to it, it says "See you next
week Mr. Delorean" not sure why but it made me laugh.

Subject: RE:Engine Problems
I get almost exactly 15 miles to the gallon of gass on my daily driving D.
I changed the O2 sensor on DMC Joe's recommendation as the frequency "buzz"
was on constantly. Now it buzzes on and off, but I still get horrible (the
same) gas mileage even compared to my automatic. While comparing my
functioning d to this one I noticed that when I press the full throttle
micro switch on this car the buzzing is constant, but the engine noise does
not change at all. On my automatic when I press the switch the buzzing is
constant and the engine revs up. I am concernd that my cylinders are
getting "gass washed" and that is why I am also burning a little oil. plz
give me suggestions
P.S. THe fuel accumulator and o2 sensor have both been changed within the
past year.

Hello, I am new at the list and I am an enchange student from Brazil. I am studying in Olympia, Washington now. I love DeLoreans and in Brazil there is just one in Sao Paulo (far from my city). I'd like to know, please, if is there any DeLorean car here in Olympia, Lacey or a near city. Thanks a lot.

Dan,
A quote of mine was amongst those that you clipped from the Lotus
mailing list and forwarded to this group. However, what you didn't
clip was my followup post:
//BTW: I didn't mean to disparage an DeLorean owners out there (eg.
//Mike G.) with my envy comment. The DMC-12 and the Esprit just seem
//to be designed with different goals in mind, so I find the need to
//compare them interesting and sometimes entertaining.
//
// -Gary
After reading my original post again, I was worried that it sounded
too condescending towards DeLorean owners.
I do agree with the point of your email. The DeLorean is a fantastic
car. I currently own a '95 Lotus Esprit S4s, and I plan on parking a
DeLorean next to it some day. No single car can be the best at
everything, but people tend to get so attached to "their" brand that
they cannot appreciate the car for what it is and recognize other
vehicles for their strengths. I see it on most of the car lists I
subscribe (the Corvette and Viper lists are the worst!), and sometimes
I just have to laugh.

This is merely speculation, and I do not mean for this to spin off into a

Subject: Auto Trans Problems
Hi,
My name is Matthew Walker - this is my first post to the DML -- but I
have
read most of the back issues and I had subscribed before in the past
( I had
to unsubscribe for various reasons )
I am the proud driver (not owner) of VIN 1219 early 81 D, Auto
Trans. A
very nice example of the marque save for trans.
I have a problem currently with it in that it won't shift from 1st to
2nd
unless I hit 5k RPM or slightly higher and then let off the gas a bit.
shifting from 2nd to third may do the same thing but I haven't pushed
it to
that. if the car is driven for a bit it will then shift normally (
or very
close to it ) on a few occasions I have had it shift almost normal (
going
from 1st to 2nd at about 35 MPH).
For further info sake - this car is very low mileage - only about 8300
miles. Trans problem cropped up about a year ago - then the car was
garaged
once again - I have only recently been able to take it back out to
try to
work on it.
I had intended to take off the Trans Computer today but the weather
was not
favorable here, and I haven't cleaned out my garage yet to make the
space
for the car to work on it in there.
Any suggestions or helpful hint would be most appreciated. Also if
anyone
is in the Dallas area let me know.
Thanks

I would be very concerned about the longevity of the automatic
transmission on a Delorean with more than stock horsepower. If you
ever looked at the parts inside you would wonder how they last at all.
The c-1 clutch is the same as in a Chevette! These power upgrades are
probably better installed in the 5-speed with a centerforce clutch and
the s/s clutch hydraulic line. Then you could beat it and it would
probably survive longer.

Dan, If you can get your hands on a copy of auto week February
11,1980, it talks about how Lotus did all the work on the chassie.
Colin Spooner, chief Lotus, head of the De lorean project team said
in the article, it was the best chassie Lotus had ever built. They
also say that it was changed from a Perfect T to a closed V. The
change was made to provide additional stability and stiffness under
the steel clad plastic body. The same article stated that the Pirelli
rubber was gone and was replaced by Goodyear 185 x 60 HR14s on the
front and 235 x 60 HR15s on the rear. Also, The HP was by the
ARTICLE 153 @ 5,300 RPM. This was a mule car.

Lot of talk about performance upgrades recently. I found a great site
with lots of hop-up parts specifically for the DeLorean:
http://www.KalecoAuto.com (click the performance link)
Their best product is a KILLER lowering kit (see the "appearance"
section) that will lower the D to a bit lower than factory specs at a
price WAY less than any of the usual suppliers. It doesn't require
cutting or replacing springs, and keeps all the same steering/suspension
geometry and the correct spring rate.
I'm going to order my cross-drilled brake lines and piston return
springs from them. =)

Subject: aftermarket parts
In light of all of the recent subject matter on the DML. I thought I'd
expand on a thought that Dan posted involving Lotus owners.
The one comment that all Deloreans are the same, yet each owner can tell his
apart and the reference to part availability either stock or custom intrigued
me to write this.
Having a DeLorean is a unique experience. We do have a car that to the
average person varies very little from car to car. We also are blessed with
a number of suppliers such as Rob, Stephen and a host of others too long to
list. Both Rob and Stephen have become good friends of mine.
The one thing that makes the DeLorean stand out over a number of cars (not to
make a comparison) is the ability of the owners to get involved at any level
they wish to participate as I did in deciding to run a national car show.
There still is room to get in and make a difference.
The DeLorean is going through some growing pains now and that has been
obvious on this list lately. Maybe we should turn our thoughts to the
efforts of the many people that make the cars run or run better.
There have been a number of parts over the years that no longer exist. Some
people don't consider the car because of hard to find parts. Between
DeLorean 1, DMC and P.J Grady and some independents almost all of the parts
that were depleted have been replaced and at a reasonable charge since
tooling is the major factor in the pricing of these parts.
All three Vendors and many others like Dave Baurle, DMC Joe, Don, and many
more have kept us running on their inginuity and their willingness to invest.
I have an interest in this as well. It has allowed the Car Shows: mine (The
DeLorean Car Show), the DOA, Eurofest, and various others to happen, like
Houston this year. There are also a ot of activities by the new and existing
groups. As time goes on and the tooling is paid off prices will drop for
these products and new ones will take their place. I do know some parts are
sold at a bit of a loss just to keep them available until the tooling is paid
off.
We are at an akward time in the life of the DeLorean and many more parts are
being remanufactured and many more new designs are being introduced to keep
the cars current for those that want to use it everyday (ie. the
suspensions). The DeLorean for the most part is a car that people drive.
The lower participation at the concourse level I think backs that up (and I
am a concourse person).
I hope all of you encourage our suppliers to keep working on new products for
us even if not all of them suite our taste. I have Driven DMC's new car and
plan to post on that in the near future but I have some research to do first.
They have done a great job. (Great event in Arizona where I drove the car)
Next time you visit either Robs site or DMC Houston and the others check out
all the new products and offering. This is not unique to the DeLorean but I
think the DeLorean supporters and Vendors have put us right there on top and
that is why the resale of the cars are as good as they are. (For you Lotus
members thanks for noticing) The Movie and JZD got it started but if the car
were a bust it would have died a long time ago.
I love my DMC as you all do so lets support the people that have kept it
there.
One last note:
If there are any GTO, Lotus (you like talking about us too it seems :-) ) or
Briklin members reading this I am putting on a Show in Memphis in 2002 (<A
HREF="" href="http://deloreancarshow.com">http://deloreancarshow.com)">deloreancarshow.com</A>). As in the past
I have invited these cars to participate in Cincinnati and Cleveland and not
only did the DeLorean owners love to see your cars the owners of these cars
enjoyed seeing the DeLoreans. If any of you wish to participate in Memphis
drop me an e-mail we'd love to have you.
Thanks for you patience on this long post but I hope we get into a thread of
what parts are needed for our car in the near future. That in itself would be
helpful to our suppliers in addition to you the owners.

I have to admit, it takes a lot to catch me off guard. But this is
downright shocking! I've had to put up with alot from owners of other
marquee's. I've had to sit thru endless amounts of cocaine jokes, but
this truly does take the cake! Never, I mean NEVER did I ever suspect
that Lotus owners would be such "enemies" of our cars. Lets check out
a few facts here.
> THIS IS INTEESTING...
> snip--->"C'mon guys, how can you give such short shrift to the car

Destoryed Lotus? If I remember correctly, they were desperately
hunting for capitol to keep their company afloat! It was the Juhan's
who kept Lotus going.
>When the project turned into a fiasco, it
> was discovered that millions of pounds of subsidies from the UK
>government
> were unaccounted for.
Yes, ever heard of GPD Services? Or better yet for the hardcore Lotus
owner, how about the book the DeLorean/Chapman Conspiracy? Why was
it's printing canceled? From what I've found out about the book it
was also about how Chapman fleeced DMC.
>The stress of the subsequent investigation is what
> finally broke Chapman, and is widely believed to have caused his

Yes, this too is a VERY interesting point! The investigation led to
the conviction of 2 higher-up employees within Lotus on fraud
charges. And how convienient was it that Chapman suddenly "died", and
that his wife refused to let investigators exhume his body in a
effort to confirm that it was really there!
> The handling is supposed to be something of a pig thanks to the

Supposed to be? I take it this person has never even driven a
DeLorean.
>I've driven the

For some one who "knows" the car I guess that he forgot to mention
the fact that 1. The stainless doesn't contribute to the wieght that
much. 2. The DeLorean and the Esprit weigh almost the same!
Either this person didn't really drive a DeLorean, or they lack more
then a few driving skills. "Cute-sy" little comments with lame humor
DO NOT make up for rude and uncalled for comments.
> I believe it was originally meant to use the Renault Alpine

More "I don't knows" and "I think"'s from people commenting on the
car, yet don't know the first thing about it! We have younger list
members in the 14+ age rage who do reports on John DeLorean, DMC, and
the car itself. I'd put my money on one of them that they know more
about the car and DMC then any of these people! I was one of them
myself!
>Delorean had grandiose dreams of a
>ceramic twin turbo engine with hundreds of HP
Gee whizz? Ever heard of the 4-cylinder Espirt w/turbos you hypocrite?
And lastly, here is the very finest that sums up the ignorace and
egos of these people.

I find it very interesting that to compare his own car this man has
to use phallic referances in order to feel more secure with his own
comments. Rather then getting into any crude comments I could make,
let me just say this to match. It's not envy on anyone's side here.
No DeLorean's don't have as powerful an engine as most Espirts do.
But if you are jellous that ours see more action then your's do (our
cars that is), then I can understand that. :)
As far as handling goes, yes, I do belive that a DeLorean could out
perform a Lotus. They are very close in comparison, but the DeLorean
has the advantage: It has a larger following of more dedicated
enthusists and owners that are willing to do more for it.
I seriously hope this man doesn't end up with a DeLorean. He would be
degrading to the car. He'd drive it out in public, and slam it in
front of everyone he meets.
If you really are on this list, then feel free to e-mail me privately
dmcvegas(at)lvcm.com
I am disappointed that you felt this way all this time, yet didn't
have the courage to say anything to anyone here. Bottom line: If it's
so bad a car, why does this person want one?
And if anyone wants to, feel free to cross this over to the Lotus
mailing list. I am aware of my comments and the anger it will cause.
Although I must also state that it will be no less then was caused
when I read these postings! But I also realize that this may not
reflect the true opinions of all Lotus enthusists. I say all of this
not out of anger or hate. But for the love of my car. Not I, nor did
anyone else here "provoke" and kind of an attack or say an ill thing
about any Lotus cars. I and others have something with our cars that
other marquees do not have. Pride! We are proud to display our cars
in public. I believe that pretty much everyone here is very
respectful of other peoples cars. We have all at one time or another
had someone ask us the question: "So, find any cocaine in your car
anywhere?" But respect keeps us from saying things like: Hey, nice
Vette! Got any Viagra stashed in the glove box?
In closing, I thank Dan for posting these messages, and I also agree
with him. Comparison is what is devaluing our cars, not
modifications. And to Dan and everyone else, don't feel embarassed or
ashamed. No one here has done anything wrong. If we are guilty of
anything, then it is being unique! I've never once felt ashamed for
not being a leming and conforming to what a magazine or someone
else's opinion is concerning a car.

You might consider that maybe your car is leaking the fuel rather than
burning too much.
You got me thinking about my car too. I used to get 18mpg, but I think it
has improved a bit since I discovered 2 loose plug wires (they were still
arcing across.) I've been completely through my fuel tank and still get a
slight fuel odor after driving the car. I see no leaks around the tank, but
I'm wondering if I may be dripping fuel around the accumulator. The fuel
lines at my accumulator all look like low pressure hoses with hose clamps
holding them on. Since the car was this way when I bought it, I'm not sure
if it's right or not.
Does anyone know?

hey group!
i would have to agree with you guys that comparing the DeLorean to other cars will always get you in trouble, but I don't think that is what is holding its value down. in my eyes there are two main factors that keep values down. the first is the cars uniqueness. to those of us who love DeLoreans it is the cars biggest selling point. but let's face it, the DeLorean is so unique, it is clearly not for everyone. the other factor is misinformation. as we all know there are a lot of wild rumors, and preconcieved (sp??) notions about the DeLorean. and i have noticed the people who love to bash the DeLorean the most, are the people who know the least about it. i could use my parents as a case and point. about a year ago they were hardened "DeLorean haters." that was because they relied on all the "misinformation" they had always heard about the car. but in the last year or so, i have drug them to look at a half-dozen or so DeLoreans, and their view of the car has changed drastically (to the point where they were going to buy a D for me, instead of me paying for it!). this is maily thanks to them meeting a few very friendly, and informative owners (thanks brian, darren, and ralph!), who dispelled all the common rumors to them. in fact, one owner had written up a flyer he was giving out at a car show, which gave a brief history of the car, company, man, and dispelled all the common rumors about the car. it also listed web sites, books, and the DeLorean parts suppliers, so if you really wanted to learn even more about the car you could. i think it would be so great if all the DeLorean owners would do this. just think of the effect it could have! well, as usual, i had to add my 2 cents.... -Louie Golden

I see someone is watching me out there. As usual you are correct in
pointing out my error. I meant to refer to the fuel metering unit.
I suppose it could also be called a fuel regulater as it does
regulate the fuel to air mixture but it is best to use the
terminology
from the service manual so that there is no confusion.

Subject: Drivers side door stuck
Here last night in my garage I went out to look at my Delorean. I just had
the torsion bars adjusted and was checking to see if either of the doors
bounce. Well neither did but when I shut my drivers side door it felt
strange. I pulled the handle a few times(almost jammed) and the door came
up. Then when I tried to shut it the front locking mechanism was stuck in
the locked positon. It wouldn't latch. I wasn't going to slam or force the
door so I left it alone for a few a hours wide open. I came back out a
little later and thought I should try to shut the door again. Well, it went
down and partially latched. Now the door has about a 1 inch crack in between
it and the door sill. It won't budge up or down, I crawled across the
console to the drivers seat and tried to push it open. I then moved the lock
switch up and down(my PL's don't work so no problems with the solenoids) and
it made a weird spring noise. WHAT CAN I DO?????

There are a couple of things to rule out before you replace the shift
computer. Make sure that the vacuum line to the modulater is
connected and not leaking. Check and adjust the line pressure. Check
the level of the trans fluid and smell it to see if it is burnt. Also
check color. (It should be red without small black bits in it). Check
the cable adjustment to the shift computer. Make sure all of the
connections to the shift computer plug are clean and tight. In the
end it will probably be the shift computer but you will kick yourself
if you wait for it, spend for it, go through the work to put it in,
and still have the same troubles. Mileage doesn't seem to be a major
factor in failures of the shift computer. You do not have to drop the
fluid and pan to replace the computer but it is a good idea to peek
inside once in a while.

Joe, Just a thought and an idea. #1. Since the 02 sensor/thru the
Lambda unit controls mixture by way of the F.V. #2 Then when the
throttle switch is engaged it overides the 02 sensor to the lambda/
Frequency Valve to lower the pressure in the lower chamber of the
fuel distributor, maby that's where the problem. When the pressure is
lowered more gas is available. I have never had the problem, but a
Volvo service shop if no De Lorean shop is around could analize the
problem. With the right equipment.

Matthew,
You are correct about suspecting the computer governor. Mine was showing
problems at 12K miles and 19 years of age. I think that computer governor
failure is a function of time and not necessarily one of use. Listen dude,
you are wrong about getting the transmission to shift from 1st to 2nd at
35mph. What is really happening is that the transmission is starting out in
2nd gear and eventually shifting into 3rd. So be very gentle with the
accelerator from a full stop until you get the problem fixed.
When my computer governor failed, it caused the transmission to usually
start off in 2nd and occasionally shift into 3rd if I held my mouth just
right. My opinion is that you need a new computer governor. While you're
at it, rebuild the filter and change the trans fluid. You might consider
having the old computer repaired. But if you buy a new one, don't throw the
old one away. There are some people on this list who can rebuild it making
it better than new. Can I have it? :)
By the way, I discovered by trial and error that there is no temporary
work-around for bypassing a defective computer governor. What I read in a
DML back issue is that you can disconnect the two plugs to the computer at
the firewall after you start the engine. (If you try it before you start
the engine, then it sets off the starter disable circuit.) Then you shift
the transmission manually starting in 1st and working your way up to 'D'.
At first I found this wouldn't work because I had two contributing factors
getting in the way. First, the shift linkage was out of adjustment and
second, the console bezel was getting in the way of allowing the shifter to
reach 1st. But even with these obstacles removed, this work-around still
doesn't work on my car. I found that disconnecting the electrical to the
computer governor only forces the transmission to stay in 2nd gear while the
shifter is in any forward gear. But with the electrical connected, if I put
the shifter in 1st gear, it starts out fine in 1st gear and stays in 1st
like it should.
Since there is nothing abnormal about my transmission or it's new computer
governor, I suggest you all scratch this idea off of your lists unless
anyone can say otherwise.
I heard a comment not long ago on talk radio of someone explaining what an
oxymoron is. She described it as being like a sports car with an automatic
transmission. Sitting there listening in my DeLorean with an automatic
transmission, I couldn't help but laugh. I'm beginning to see what she was
talking about.
And for you guys out there with manual transmissions and your stainless
steel braided clutch lines -- stop gloating! Why are you reading this
anyway? It doesn't apply to you! :)
