Oversteer is when the rear end is sliding out. You steer a certain amount,
but the back wheels move over causing you to turn as though you had put a
lot more steering input in. So it oversteers.
Understeer means that the car doesn't turn as much as you want it to. The
front wheels slide forward even if you steer more.
It applies to all cars.

Hello again,
Thanks for the help Mr Teitelbaum, you were right! but not first:). Nick
Pitello helped me out earlier today and we found the problem. The 3 screws
on the intake were almost completely backed out all the way. I turned them
all in and now the car runs much better. It still needs a new 02 sensor,
tomorrows project is getting the old one out. what should I put on the
threads when installing the new one?

storage for over 10 years. I drove it for three years and it had 17K miles
on when I got it from the seized vehicle auction. It was at the training
facility in Irvine, California. It is and was well maintained and is
mechanically sound; no dents; excellent black interior.

There are three versions of the Bosch idle speed motor. Although they look
different they all operate under the same specifications. The factory
installed version found in all DeLoreans was finished in black specifically
for the DeLorean application.
The condition you are describing has nothing to do with the idle speed
motor, if the idle speed drops excessively than the throttle stop screw is
out of calibration.
The Bosch model number for all versions is the same i.e.: 0 280140 500
there, is an additional number i.e.: 146 for black (early) and 745 for gold
(late).

I have a question about the idle speed regulator. On all the
DeLorean's that I've looked at, I've noticed that there are 2
versions of the idle speed regulator: A black one, and a gold/brass
colored one. On every DeLorean I've seen that has the black on
installed (including mine), the engine comes down quickly from a rev,
then dips below 700 rpm's. When the happens the engine always
shutters and almost dies. Most time it is so bad that the alternator
warning light will sometimes illuminate. On the car's w/the gold
colored units, the engine always comes down gently to it's idle and
never goes below 750± rpm's. My question is this: 1. Does anyone know
the BOSCH # for this 2nd version? 2. Which version do the parts
suppliers ship?

Jim,
The early Bosh fuel pumps had a check valve integrated into the body of the
pump, this style pump uses a standard one piece fitting (flat head). The
later style pump uses an external check valve which requires the famous
"dome nut".
FYI: the original style pump was discontinued to a high failure rate of the
built in check valve.

One more question i want to ask. www.jcwhitney.com has an excellent
selection on gas struts. They have gas struts for every car except the D.

I have recieved ALOT of emails from people who are intrested in the
Dash replacement I mentioned a few days ago here. Well here's an
update: I CAN'T GET A HOLD OF THIS GUY! I think he works out of his
car or something because no matter what time of the day I call his
office I ALWAYS get a recording saying he's not in and to press 1 to
page him. Well I paged him a few times and he called back
once....while I was out to lunch. I am starting to feel a little
uneasy in dealing with him if he does say he will produce them for
us. Anway I will continue to try and get a hold of him. He is located
in California and I am in NY.

When you turn into a corner and the car wants to continue straight more than
it wants to turn it's called understeer. Oversteer is just the oposite. In
the case of a rear engine car like the DeLorean, you have excess weight
hanging out behind the rear axle and at some point things will emulate a
pendulum and the engine will try to swing around the front wheels center
line. To fight this tendency Lotus used larger wheels and tires at the rear
along with an unusually wide track both front and rear. It works quite well
and the DeLorean takes a lot of push before the rear starts wanting to come
around. The compromise is that we have to put up with a bit of understeer.

You are correct in saying that the cold start system shouldn't affect
the idle. Under normal conditions if all of the components are working
properly then you would be right. But we are dealing with a
malfunction and do not know exactly where to start. Unplugging the
cold start valve is a very simple troubleshooting procedure that
anyone can do. This does not eliminate the possibility that the valve
could be leaking in which case removing the plug will do nothing. In
all likelyhood the problem lies in the fuel pressure regulater which
can only be diagnosed by either direct replacement with a known good
unit or by installing a pressure gauge and troubleshooting the fuel
system.

Joel, you might also have gunk in your fuel sending unit sleeve, causing the
float to stick. I took my sender out last week in the process of cleaning
the tank and mine was loaded with black silt. Yuk! The unit is only two
years old... I have the receipt from the prior owner. But the pickup hose
and boot are deteriorating, which is why I had it apart. The prior owner's
mechanic "cleaned and repaired" the tank and components (not a "real" DMC
shop!)
You'd think with a new sender being installed, they'd at least check the
rubber parts! Nope. I was leaking gasoline into the neck of the pump boot
(rot) and onto the top of the sender (no seal ring!) I've been too busy to
finish it... the inertia switch had been bypassed too... but I'll rinse out
my sender with gas before I button it up for good.

I have just received a DeLorean mousepad bought on Ebay from a 'repeat
advertiser/seller' ("Custom Mousepads & Address Labels") ... my advice to
other DMLers is don't bother!
This product is terrible in my humble opinion. The image of the DeLorean is
extremely blurred (a very poor scan!), the colour is terrible, the rubber
pad is also badly cut and scruffy. This item was only $7 but is a complete
waste of $$$.
I thought it was the same as one I saw previously ... maybe supplied by one
of the DMC shops (?) or Clubs.
Any other buyers agree or disagree?

I just purchased a used Delorean Lambda ECU and I'm trying
to adapt it for use in my Renault R5 Turbo (grey-market).
Since both these cars use the Bosch K-Jetronic system,
I think it'll be doable. Unfortunately, I don't have a
pinout for the ECU connector or a section of the wiring
that includes the connector. Any help or suggestions would
be much appreciated.

Does anybody have any info on this car? It was
apparently in Allentown, PA for some time.
This car is for sale by a small dealership in PA
and the salesman/owner of the place doesn't know
much about the car (he just purchased the dealership,

Anyone out there with a color inkjet printer can make the mouse pad
themselves. All you need is a white mousepad and special "iron on"
transfer ink jet paper. Print ANY Delorean image to the special paper
then put it ontop of the white mouspad and Iron it on. Viola
instant "custom" mousepad. I have done it with other pictures (of
people) and it comes out good.

I had talked about doing this a LONG time ago (about four years ago?) and
had started on the project with my grandfather who is a retired model
builder. We did some research and found that forming the ss would be very
difficult for us due to the extremely low radius angles in a model that
small, if I remember correctly. I only posted about it once and didn't get
any response anyway so I never pursued it any further. I then worked with
All American Models briefly on getting the replacement stock parts to
convert the BTTF models to stock DeLoreans made but my response from the
builder indicated he wasn't really interested anyway unless I fronted a LOT
of money for the rest of the group. I think that deal eventually happened
under someone else's leadership. And now the situation with Lee's
models...man...this is a mess.

It generally destroys it. Buy a new one - less than $5 from your
friendly DMC place. You can't really cut one yourself, kind of hard
to buy metallized asbestos sheet. Plain cork or paper gasket material would not last the trip around the block.

A 160mph face? I would love to see some pictures of this as I have
never even heard of it before. I've heard of, and seen in person the
original 85mph, and the original 140mph, (yea, original, there was
one at the Cleveland show!). I have also seen DMC-Houston's 170mph,
Marty Mier's 140mph vinyl reproduction, and the original Canadian
240kph. I dont know much about how the speedometer works, or how to
adjust the odometer. However I think it would be possible to remove
the faces on the two speedos, swap them, and get them re-calibrated.
That way you technicaly still have your original speedo with accurate
mileage, but you just have a different face on it. But most of all I
would like to see some pictures of this 160!!!!

I have recently been exposed to some of the grand teachings of sensei
Dan... As few of us discovered on the RI trip, Dan is an
interesting guy, but how many of you know that he bleeds stainless
steel?
When I didn't get any info about the repair history of my car out of
DMC Houston (still waiting, James!!!) I decided to heed the advice
given to me, and flush the brake, clutch, oil, and coolant systems,
in addition to getting a new brake m/c. I brought my car up to Dan's
place in Central NJ last weekend and it ended up having to stay there
a few days. He went way, way, beyond the call of duty in helping me
out with not only the brake m/c, but the clutch m/c (which was a
bitch to do), he put a self-bleeder in the coolant system, and
generally took the bull by the horns and kicked major ass for me.
Quick suggestions for other owners: the non-resevior (sp?) brake m/c
i
receieved from carparts.com was a waste. We had a bitch of a time
swapping the resevior, and the it leaked like a $3 -- nevermind.
Check the status of your fluids constantly -- the cluch system looked
like Montezuma's Revenge -- UGLY! And teflon fuel hoses can handle
brake fluid (we were told).

The dash is a high quality dash replacement (with a simulated leather
look). The dash board replacements are guaranteed. They can be made
in any color of your choice. Now here's the best part.....it will
only cost $95.00 for the entire replacement dash in black ($15
additional for gray or any other color)!. I think this is an
excellent deal.
Now here's the catch: the company is located in CA, they need a GOOD
dash & binnacle (instrument housing) that is taken out of a car to
take measurements from, to draw plans and make a mold. They guarantee
that nothing will happen to the dash and binnacle and that it will
return in the same exact condition as it was sent to them. They also
need a minimum of 100 orders to make this. If all goes well they can
start making/delivering the replacement dashes by the first of the
year. Is there ANY Delorean owner in the Palo Alto, CA area (it's
where they are located) that has a good dash & binnacle they can lend
them? Or is there any D owner that can ship it to them? I would send
them mine, but the binnacle is VERY badly cracked and the dash is not
in the best condition.
Please anyone who is interested in this (pass the word along to other
owners not on the DML) or can spare to send a dash and binnacle to
them email me privately at srubano[at]optonline.com I also need
feedback from anyone who is interested in how you would like it
manufactured. I was thinking of having them make it all one piece
(binnacle and dash together). Or maybe everyone would like it to be
two pieces (binnacle and dash separate)? I figured a one piece design
would have a cleaner look to it. As for the glove box, I will see if
they can make a cap for it for anyone that needs to repair a cracked
glove box lid.
If I can't get a 100 piece order guarantee, then I will see if maybe
one of the Delorean parts dealers would like to make that guarantee
and sell the product through them. Doing this will raise the price a
bit for them to cover their expenses.
They are very interested to manufacture this but they need a min of
100 orders for the price they are selling it for to cover the cost of
designing it and making the molds.
