On the same note.  Those governor things only have a life of about
30K miles.  So, if you are much over that, then it probably is bad or
is getting ready to die.

If you want your control panel lights off unless your headlights are on
do this.
Put a 1/4" male spade connector on each end of a 2 1/2" jumper wire.
Looking at
the relays behind the passenger seat, in with the fuses, pull the third
one from
the left in the row closest to the rear of the car. You should have a red
one,
three silver ones and a tall green one. Pull the middle silver one. Put
one end
of the wire you made in the lower slot ( closest to the other row of
relays ) and
the other end in the slot to the right. After this modification your
heater control
panel lights will come on with your headlights.

My Lambda counter is at 030 which I assume is in Thousands of miles, is
this a correct assumption? Also, in order to reset the counter I

hole? Must I remove the counter to reset it to get at the white plastic

Sounds like your warm-up regulator is going out.  I had a similar
problem with mine.  I'd start it in the morning, then it would die
immediately.  Let it idle for a few minutes, then shut off the engine
and restart it: started right up. I didn't realize the warm-up regulator
was the problem until the day I was driving to my mechanic's shop to get
that starting problem diagnosed, and the engine just shut off while
going down the highway.  Luckily, I broke down near an industrial area
where I had easy access to a phone.

I believe the lambda counter reads in per cent of 30,000 miles.  So, if
yours reads 030 that means you are at 30% of 30,000 or about 10,000
miles.

If I am wrong someone please correct me.

Looking at the relays behind the passenger seat remove the third relay
from
your left in the row closest to the rear of the car . Get a 10 ohm
resistor
from Radio Shack and install a 1/4" male connector to both ends of the
wire
that is built into the resistor. (You may have to extend the wires a bit
first.)  Cover any bare wires with electrical tape and plug the two spade
connectors into the right side slot and the front slot. The climate
control
lighting will now go on and off with the headlights and the resistor will
reduce the intensity to the level of the instrument lighting.

Sean,

Sounds like a bad thermo-time switch, which is located on the drivers side
of the water pump. Next time you attempt to start engine cold, unplug the
thermo-time switch and jump the connections in the plug. If the car starts
ok, that's the problem. It's a standard Bosch part and any foreign car
parts store can get you one. Ask for one for a 1982 SAAB 900 Turbo. It's
the same. Oh, and after the car starts take the jumper off so you don't
flood the engine.

NO,  don't touch it until your LAMBDA lamp comes on.  OR,
when it reads 100. You can reset it if you want, but the
thing does nothing more than turn that light on.

Its nothing to really worry about.  ITs just somewhat of a maintainence
item.  Some folks with lots of care and cleaning have got the things to
last up to 40K or more, but its rare.  Its an easy to find part ,
available
at auto parts stores or chrysler dealers.  The biggest mistake is to
ignore the fact that it needs replace and continue to drive the car
if its not shifting correctly.  This can cause extensive and expensive
damage to the internal parts of the transmission.

Arnie Brandon's Reply:

DeLorean Overheating Problem/Solution

For some years, the Pacific Northwest DeLorean Club has used the below
described solution to the overheating problem. This system was designed
by
Toby Peterson and Arnie Brandon, of PNDC.

The problem occurs when air is allowed to enter your cooling system (when
the system is worked on or the overflow bottle is allowed to get empty)
and
the result is an air lock of the cooling circulation system. This is why
all production DeLoreans came with an air bleeder valve located just
above
the water pump.

[The last couple of postings explained how to bleed the air.]

To overcome this problem permanently, merely remove the air bleeder valve
and insert a single hose barb. To this hose barb, attach 44 inches of
very
good hose. Use a hose hanger to fasten the hose to the rear of the engine
compartment, so that it will not interfere with any of the belts. Run the
hose behind the overflow bottle and toward the front of the bottle. Cut
the
small return hose to the bottle and insert a brass T-fitting (a couple
inches from the bottle). Connect the 44 inch hose to the T-fitting. Use
small hose clamps on all (4) connections.

This essentially eliminates the air-entrapment overheating problems
incurred in DeLoreans.  The higher pressure at the top of the engine
provides a small flow of fluid (and any trapped air) towards the bottle.
Air bubble go up into the overflow and are replaced by fluid from the
bottle.  All you have to do is keep fluid in the bottle.

For $17.00 plus $4.00 for US destination shipping and handling, you can
get
this complete kit (barb, hose, T-fitting, clamps, hanger and
hanger-screw)
with full installations instructions to cover this 15 minute install.

Hey List,

Remember me?? I was the one who was having a problem with the engine
revving.  Two days ago I decided to see if the fuel injector nozzles were
clogged or not and they were.  So my brother ordered them and They came in
yesterday.  I put them in and my car was revving perfectly.  I couldn't
believe it, a simple problem that had me stumped for almost 3 months.  But
later yesterday night, I turned the key and my dad saw a spark coming from
where the started was, so now I have to take the starter out so my
brother can
have it rebuilt.  Also when the car was running the battery light was on,
does
this mean I have to have my alternator rebuilt also?? Thanks.

Ralph,

I belive the bigest problem with the automatic's durability is heat. The
cooling system for the tranny fluid is the poorest I've seen. That coupled
with the exhaust crossover pipe running practically on top of the tranny
make for pretty high temps.  If I had an automatic I'd most surely add a
transmission cooler.

Doug,
My '83 vin#16000 is for sale - Rob Grady has serviced it for the most
part except for things that my local mechanic has handled ( Rob walked
him through the clutch installation). It has 31K on it - has a set of
NCTs that I got from Goodyear just before they stopped making them.
Everything else works well. Asking $19,500 for it. Garaged in
Whitestone, New York ( near the Whitsetone Bridge and Laguardia airport
). I am the original owner and have all of the manuals and service
records.   If interested let me know.
Best regards,

Never heard of this part being available from Chrysler dealers! My
other DeLorean was an automatic and the computer lasted to 60,000mi.
before it required maintenance. This thing has contacts in it that
are like points in a distributor and it operates on .05 volts, as I
remember. Not really a good design, being located in the transaxle
and subject to heat and shock. I pulled mine out and cleaned it
carefully and everything worked fine 'till I sold it. I had lost my
interest in owning an automatic and now own a 5 speed. Not at all
sorry.

Subject: DML: Help, i want a Delorean!

Hi people of DML

I am from Buenos Aires - ARGENTINA and i am very interested in owning a
Delorean.  I have taken a look of some lists and sites, but i'll like
receiving an advice of you, who have more experience, and any offers by
this way.
My cash is about $ 16.000 and i am wondering if i could have a D' in a
good condition. Note that i need to contact someone that could take care
of packing it into a container and shipping it to Bs.As (Of course i am
carring the cost of shipping).
Then i have contacts in USA that could take a look of the car and may
help in order to buy the car. So, if anyone could help me more, or if
anyone have a Delorean in good shape to sell please contact me, send me
pics, and we could talk about.

I am in DML since january and have been reading all the mails of info
that you guys talk about D's and day by day i increase my knowledge and
love for this cars.

Thanks for your time. I will thank all kind of help. And we'll be in
contact, hoping next i could sign with my VIN # down. It'll be the first
Delorean running on Argentine floor.

Regards

I can't disagree more with this statement.  One of the things that I
praise
the Delorean most for is its interior and how well the design has held up.
Compare the Delorean's interior to any other 1981 model year car including
Ferrari, Mercedes, and Porsche (which can be easily done by viewing the
Road & Track article in Delorean Portfolio) and there's no denying that
the
Delorean's interior is much more modern, sporty, ergonomic, and stylish.
I
believe the Delorean's interior could EASILY pass for an interior in a
modern car.

I was wondering what a Ferrari Countach looked like, but didn't want to
say
anything.  Reverse is towards you and back, the trick is that it has a
lockout and you have to pull up on the shifter (most cars with a lockout
require youto push down).  Hope this helps.  I like your enthusiasm for
the
marque.

I bought my first D yesterday and love it.  In the short time I've driven
it, the grim reaper called in the speedo and the heating / cooling fan
(all
speeds).  From back issues I know what to check.  I'm wondering if anyone
out there has experience with any dmc-aware service provider in the Boston
area.  If I can't find any I'll probably plan a couple of days in NYC with
P. J. Grady +ACY- Co.  I also have to say I'm very impressed with the
support
network you guys have set up.  Thanks in advance.

I do drive my DeLorean daily and it is my only car.  The DeLorean is just
as reliable as my wifes Saturn.  My insurance cost is about $50/month
with State Farm.

Umm . . . certified by whom?  There are a number of "top names" in
DeLorean parts and service, but no factory to certify them.

I suggest you check the DeLorean Owners Association website at:
www.delorean-owners.org
Click on "Marketplace" then "Advertisers" to see a list of some of the big
names, along with their locations and phone numbers.  Dave Bauerle in
central Ohio is probably the closest to you.

Notably absent from the DOA list is a new location I saw in DeLorean
World magazine recently.  It said that Stephen Wynn is establishing a
new place in Florida, which might also be convenient for you.

Also keep in mind that DeLorean One and some of the others will gladly
send a truck to Tennessee to pick up your car and bring it back to you.

When you own a DeLorean there are plenty of jobs that you can do for
yourself.  If you don't want to do the routine jobs (brake pads, tires,
stuff
like that) yourself, your regular neighborhood mechanic should be able to
handle them.

Rad Dad, I live in Hawaii and, needless to say, it gets pretty warm here.
Could you please tell me where I can get a transmission oil cooler for my
automatic DeLorean. Thanks and Aloha!
