Subject: DML: My "Chick Magnet" Story
My friend Chris Rabalais, a fellow DML'er, and I used to go to the car
show in Scottsdale once a month. Invariably we had the only DeLorean's
there, and tended to get a lot of attention. As is the case at most car
shows, the crowd was predominantly male, and the females that were in
attendance generally were with someone already. One night up there a
young blond in a VERY short skirt asks if she can sit in my car - at this
time I was very single (as opposed to engaged, like I am now) and said
"Sure!". I closed her in the drivers seat and chatted with her through
the open window. She asked what it was like to drive, and I asked if she
knew how to drive a five-speed. She replied that she did and I said,
"Let's go for a drive!". I hopped in the pasenger seat and gave her a
quick tutorial on the car (seat & mirror adjustments, how to find
reverse, etc.) and off we went. We got a mile or two down the road and
she said, "Show me how's it supposed to be driven." We changed seats and
took off again. After demonstrating the handling characteristics and her
commenting on how much attention the DeLorean garnered no matter where we
were, we went back to the show and exchanged phone numbers. We went out a
couple times after that, but never "clicked".
I knew my fiancee before I had the DeLorean (back then I had a big old
green '69 Cadillac Eldorado), so I have to assume that the DeLorean did
not act as magnet in that regard. That and the fact that she will clean
the wheels on the DeLorean without complaining told me she was "the one".

There are always funny stories about women and cars. I had dropped my
daughter off last year at the Night of Fright for Halloween. It
attracted so
many people I couldn't go anywhere so I just opened it up. While I was
standing there this cute girl named Mellisa, around 20 -25 jumped in the
car
without even asking and began yelling I can't believe I'm sitting in a
DeLorean. She was basically nuts in my opinion but being the kind hearted
male chauvinest I am I gave her a ride. She was almost histerical the
whole
time and when she got out all her friends thought she was nuts also.

over an hour to get out of there.

I've had a number of calls and e-mails in regards to hotel reservations.
If
you send in the reservation through me I will reserve the room and the
charge
does include tax. All you are responsible are phone calls, movies etc.
If
you want to put it on your card you can call in and they will give you the
same rate as long as you tell them you are with the show. You will not
however receive the packet for the show when you check in because I will
not
have you registered through my system and you will receive your packet at
the
dinner Friday evening or Saturday morning at the museum.
A confirmation letter will be sent out the middle of May for those that
have
registered with instructions and car show rules depending based on your
class.
I have many cars in the under 50K catagory that we will split the group to
under 35K and 35 to 50K or possibly three gorups. I'll wait to see how
the
rest come in.
Thats the update so far.
Looks like we'll have a good turnout.

i believe that the DeLorean is kind of a chick magnet. at least it is
for me. every time i see a D on the road, i honk and wave to express my
appreciation. last week, i saw a ferrari countach driving and i hardly
even noticed it! im not saying that countach's are worthless, i think
theyre pretty cool myself, but the DeLoreans have much more style and
are nicer looking in my opinion. also, everyone i talk to about
DeLoreans (girls and guys) get excited when i mention the car. some
people find it funny when i talk so excitedly about the car, but i often
notice that these same people wave when they see the cars driving like i
do. i just now noticed that this message really served no purpose in
answering the "are DeLoreans chick magnets?" question, but i tried.
anyway, i think that if a girl is turned off because a guy does not own
an extremely expensive car, they are not worth dating anyway! get a girl
who likes the D because of its neat look, and keep her (did i mention im
available? ;>).

Subject: DML: Dash Clock Repair
Thanks to list member Duke Bladorn, my dash clock now works properly.
I was unable to set the hour on my 1981's dash clock. It turns out
that after the clock is removed from the panel, you can carefully pry
the face plate off of the clock. Inside are two pins that contact tiny
itty bitty switches. When you press on the pins they compress the
switches, and you set the hours and minutes. The pin for the hours
switch had fell out. Simple repair. If your clock lights up, but are
unable to set it, try the above repair. It saved me $135 on a
replacement. Thanks Duke, I owe you a drink when we meet in Greenville,
Alabama the weekend of the March 21st. I won't bother with writing a
disclaimer about your results if you attempt this repair, we are all
adults and are responsible for our own actions.

Speaking of rentals, I wouldn't recommend renting out our D's to just
anyone.
For example: A friend of mine who is also a DeLorean owner owed this
guy a favor. So, when this guy got married, he asked if he could
use the DeLorean for his honeymoon. My friend agreed to it and
they went off. A week later, the D came back a wreck. The louver
was cracked, the door was dented in, stainless scratched. Now, I
seen his car before and after. What a mess.
And since this was a favor, so to speak, this guy won't pay
anything for the damages. And taking him to court wouldn't
help to much either. Just think of the insurance rates going
up over this little favor.
So, if you plan to rent your D out, please make sure that you
can trust the person, and maybe even sign some sort of contract
as well. Just to be on the safe side.

DMLer's,
I had fuse number 8 blow last week. I replaced it and it blew as soon as I
turned on the lights. I checked each light, and found the right front
running
light bulb was out. Replaced it and replaced #8 fuse for the third time
and
you guessed it, fuse blew as soon as lights were turned on. I have
checked the
tail light bulbs, running light bulbs (front and side), and lic plate
bulb. My
question is has anyone else had this problem? If so, where and how should
I
look for the short? Could one of the relays be bad? This is a minor
problem
in that I dont have dash lights, but a major problem in that I dont have
tail
lights on the right side. Left side lights (all) are fine. Any help would
save
the day.

Several ways to go about this but an easy way to eliminate a few things
is to disconnect the wiring harness at each end of the car. In the
engine
bay behind the wiring panel cover, unplug the BLACK connector. This
will disconnect all of the lighting on the tail end of the car. Try your
fuse again
and see what happens, if no luck then move to the front. remove the
washer
bottle cover and disconnect the wiring connector. This will remove all of
the front
lamps from the circuit. If not luck still, then that leaves the cigar
lamp, instrument
panel ,light switch lamp, and clock (81 car). Have fun !

A quick response as this can get complicated.
Remove all the bulbs that you can, then try it with a new fuse. Sometimes
a bulb will have an internal short to ground.
If the short is still there, then you will need a volt ohm meter. You
might get by using a test light but I find a meter
more accurate. A schematic will also help. If you need help with tracing

I had this same problem when I bought my D, and it turns out that the lamp
assemblies are very suseptable to moisture. The car only had 3200 miles on
it and was garaged, but my front right running light was corroded almost
beyond recognition. My theory is that the way the car was parked, this
light was close to the garage door thereby exposing it to the salty
Mountain View air.
Anyway...you can easily deduct which light is bad by removing the rear
tray
in the center console, and finding the bundle of 6 or 7 orange/white wires
joined together. These branch off to the individual components on fuse 8.
Separate the wires, turn your lights on, then reconnect them 1 by 1 untill
you either blow the fuse, or you get a noticable spark when connecting the
wire. It would also help to measure the amperage drain on the leads.

I want to verify correct operation of the lambda loop. In the manual a
"diagnostic plug" is referenced that is supposed to allow me to monitor
the duty cycle of the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) output to the
frequency valve. I have three questions:
(1) Where is this diagnostic plug? I can't find it around the ECU.
(2) How do I translate dwell angle specifications to duty cycle
percentages?
(3) Is it difficult to replace the lambda sensor? It looks hard to get
to.

Subject: DML: Updated DMC parts reference database
I have uploaded the latest update to the DMC parts reference database
to the DMCNews web site. This release is essentially the same as
previous releases with the addition of some more cross reference
infomration. This release has updated parts data from the German club
as well as the new cross reference list from the Southeastern DeLorean
Owners Club (SEDOC). Since the rest of the program has changed
minimally, I suggest you download just the update diskette if you are
interested in the new release.
I have gotten a couple questions that it may make sense to post here:
1. Doesn't this software promote people plagerizing parts cross
reference data?
Part of the intent with the software release is to crater the market
for plagarized parts cross reference data. By making the information
available from the source with proper attribution, there is no longer
any value in plagarizing someone else's list. Once an item is cross
references in the database, there is no value in having it cross
referenced again, thus plagarizing a list from the reference database
has no value. By providing attribution to the source of the data the
intent is to give credit where it is due, while reducing the appeal of
duplicated parts lists.
2. Now that DMC (Houston) has their on-line store up and running,
isn't the parts reference software completely redundant.
The DMC online store is great and I have learned a lot about parts
pricing and availability. It's an excellent resource for looking up
parts prices and for some searching. The parts database software is
completely complimentary to DMC's online store. While the store is
great for online pricing and searching for parts, the parts database
software is an off-line resource for searching for DMC parts and cross
reference data. Also, due to it running off-line it is generally
better suited for browsing and viewing of parts diagrams which are
often a little cumbersome to deal with on-line. The DMC store and the
parts database are complimentary resources for DMC parts pricing
information and cross reference and browsing. In order to offload
DMC's server, it may be interesting to explore the feasibility of
capturing their price list for use as a plug-in to the database for
use by folks with limited net access. I have yet to approach DMC with
any such ideas (any one at DMC think this would be valuable?).
In order to differentiate the database software further from the
capabilities available on the online store, I will in future releases
concentrate development on areas that complement those capabilities of
DMC's online store.

Subject: DML: Speedo Trip Meter Reset Arm
During the process of developing the 140MPH replacement faces for
the
Delorean speedo unit ( which are still in process ), I have located
another
replacement piece for the speedo, the Trip Meter Reset Arm. The parts I
have
found are OEM exact replacements. These pieces are the reset arms only
(which
is the piece that breaks ). They do not include the knob, collar or screw
which are attached to the front of the arm. If you still have all the
parts
from when your trip reset broke, this reset arm will allow you to repair
your
speedo to like new.
The installation of this part requires the removal and partial
disassembly of the speedo unit ( not as hard as it sounds ). Normally,
disassembly of the speedo requires re-calibration of the unit by a speedo
shop
upon reassembly, thats where the hassel and cost comes in. We have
developed a
procedure which, when followed, allows replacement of the reset arm
without
requiring re-calibration of the speedo unit. This allows you to remove the
speedo, replace the broken parts and reinstall the unit all at one time,
without having to have the car down for days while the speedo shop does
their
thing. The instructions for this procedure are included with the
replacement
arm.
Cost for the reset arm is $24ea, which includes shipping within the
USA.

I'm having a strange problem with my automatic trans. Every-so-often, =
as I'm coming to a stop, the car will go into neutral. If I put the =
car in reverse (not having to actually go in reverse) and put it back in =
drive, its ok. Has anyone ever experienced this problem? I just =
replaced the computer governor not too long ago so I don't believe it's =
related to that. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. By the way, =
thanks to everyone who submitted help on my spark plug well problem. My =
mechanic put in a helicoil made especially for spark plug wells and its =
working great!!!

Hi Ron,
I am sure that others will tell you the same and this has been said over
and over again. Put in the double core or is that triple core radiator,
Fan Zilla, all new hoses and metal coolant lines, use the correct
thermostat, and above all, when filling and maintaining the coolant
fluids, be sure to correctly purge the system of air.
My DMC had a heating problem which after some over heats finally calmed
down after being purged correctly, there are several places where air
pockets can live, which will cut the circulation by as much as half.

Hi Scott,
It's noted on the back of the reservation that the reservation it's self
will be returned with the kit. So you will be able to keep the
reservation unless you sell or trade it to a third party.

Dave Bauerle is a terriffic guy, as well as a top-notch DeLorean expert.
I
have always found dealing with him to be a pleasant experience (and a
good bargain, too).
He has a very large shop with several lifts and proper equipment for
working on DeLoreans. The last time I was at his shop he gave a group
of us a nice, informative technical seminar.
BTW the DeLorean Club of Ohio is having a get-together on March 28. It
will be at the Ohio Historical Society Museum in Columbus, which is very
close to Radnor. Although March is a little early for Ohio DeLoreans to
come out of hibernation, it's an excuse to see each other and talk about
our cars. Dave Bauerle should be there. If anyone is interested in
joining
us please drop me a line.

Anyone who owns a DeLorean or is interested in DeLoreans is welcome to

As far as worship of the car is concerned, you are free to do as you

the bonnet.
Just kidding steve, its people like you that will keep the marque alive
through out the years.
When the time to meet gets closer, we will post more details. It looks
like we will try to meet at the Applebee's in Greenville for lunch. It
all depends on the weather.

Well, I didn't have the exact problem, but somewhat similar..
With the car in drive, when I was going slow or stopped, and I would give
it some gas, it would shift into neutral and then shift into first. My
problem was that the gears in the transmission were stripped. The shop
that did the repairs charged me $2300 to fix it.. About half of that cost
was parts.
You might want to drop the pan and see if there are metal fragments in
there... That's a pretty good sign that your gears are toast... Otherwise
it could just be a lack of hydraulic pressure, in which case you may want
to check your tranny fluid level or the filter... In any case, unless
it's
a computer problem, you'll most likely want to have a look inside of the
pan to calm any doubts.. Good luck!

The update should be installed over the top of an existing
installation in the same directory as before without uninstalling the
previous version first. The parts manual bitmaps should be left in the
DATA subdirectory of the installation directory from the previous
version. The program searches for the parts diagram bitmaps in the
DATA subdirectory of the install directory and if it does not find the
corresponding bitmaps, you get the error messages you report.
I just downloaded the update image from the web site and installed it
and noticed the following issue (I will post this for others to see).
The default installation directory for the new update is apparently
not the same as the directory in which the previous releases installed
the software. If you are installing the update, be sure to change the
installation directory during the installation process to match your
previous installation directory. After about the fourth dialog into
the setup process, the "Choose Destination Location" dialog box
appears. Click the "Browse" button and select the directory in which
the previous version was installed (the older versions apparently
installed by default into a directory called "...\DeCO\Find DMC Part"
and by default the current installation directory is "...\DeCo\DMC
Parts Database"
If you have trouble, you can download the complete program and
re-install it. I updated the complete program as well, so if you
install all four floppies there is no need to install the update.
Please keep me posted if you continue having trouble so that I can
address any potential problem that may exist.
