I have seen a DeLorean in an episode for Eerie Indiana. In the plot the
main character believes his own life is just a TV show. He meets up with
the director who drives a DeLorean. It is even mentions as such in the
episode.

My question is one of ignorance. First what is valve lash and how can you
tell if you need it adjusted. I have a tap in my engine and could this be
an indication that I need this adjusted. Also how do you adjust valve
lash
and do you need any special tools. I looked for this in my work shop
manual and came up with nothing. The sound comes from the right side of
the engine compartment and I know it is not the vibration sound common to
the frequency valve. Could the alternator make a tapping sound. Thanks

I guess it is time to get my feet wet. I am a new owner of an 81 D (vin
2497). I've had it for approx. 2 wks. First on my to do list is to get the
passenger door adjusted. The top of the door hits the roof when the door
is
opened or closed. Is this a job for a green horn? I have been sizing up
the
procedure. As far as I can see it is a matter of adjusting the hinges on
the sides of the door. Do I need to remove the strut first ?
Another concern of mine are the heat shields around the exhaust system.
The
shields are disintegrating. Are they asbestos? Are they a hazard? Do I
need
them? Are there replacements available? I would appreciate any help in
these matters.

Jim,
first, Its not a question of ignorance. But, the procedure of
adjusting
"valve Lash" is somewhat of a Generic Term. Valve lash refers to the
amount
of clearance between the top of the stem and rocker arm. Most of the
time,
its
measured in .000 of a given increment of measurment. This usually only
applies
to engines with solid lifters. Engines with hydraulic lifters are
usually
set to run
at "zero lash". Adjusting the "Valve lash" usually just refers to
adjusting the pre-load
of the springs.
Delorean engines (prv), have a history of excessive cam wear. But,
usually
just
causes a loss in horsepower. The best way to track down a noice, such as
a tapping or clicking, is to use a hose up to your ear and move it about
the engine
and that will help you narrow down the location of the noise. Adjusting
the valves
and springs does require some special tools, but a good mechanic will have
these
handy and by pulling the valve cover, should be able to tell you what is
causing the
problem. it could just be a valve that is sticking open or something.

nature of this question, but... The 'fuel door' on the hood of some
DeLoreans... That designates an early '81, does it not? Also (REALLY
stupid question forthcoming), is that actually where you fill the fuel
tank
from? Is this a preferrable configuration? It is more dangerous to have
this configuration in the event of a crash? Any input would be GREATLY
appreciated... Thank you for putting up with these queries... :)

In regards to the DeLoreans in Movies, there is a rather smutty movie
out there called Malibu Express. The main character drives a RED
DeLorean throughout the entire first half of the movie. The movie
probably came out in the early eighties, and it definately classifies as

Did everyone see "My Classic Car" on TNN over the weekend? Most of
that episode was shot last fall at the first annual "My Classic Car"
Autofest in Evansville, Indiana. As fellow DMLer Micah Fryman
promised, seven DeLoreans were featured. The DeLoreans made three
appearances, including a brief lecture by Lincoln Nation. The cars looked
good!
It looked like "My Classic Car" attracted thousands of cars to thier
meet.
Somehow, the DeLoreans managed to get more television time than any
other type of car at the Autofest. Most of the other cars weren't even
mentioned!
They featured Lincoln Nation's DeLorean talk between two muscle cars:
a Ford Galaxie 500 XL and a Chevy Chevelle LS6. I believe this is the
most important type of exposure for increasing the value of DeLoreans,
because it gives our cars extra credibility with classic car collectors.
I got the show on videotape and plan to play it at future DCO events.
Does anyone else know of similar opportunities to get free TV plugs like
that?

Jim,
Chances are that nothing needs to be done to your valves. More often
what you hear is a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. It's fooled me
before, not on my Delorean but on a Porsche and a Mercury.

Does anyone else subscribe to the free "DMC Houston Emailgram?"
I got the first issue last week and it was great. It's like a little
E-mail
magazine from DMC. It had a short story about how they have "finally
straightened out" the carpets / interiors section of the warehouse. It
had
some information about part prices, and a plug for the Cincinnati Car
Show / Warehouse Tour. It also said DMC Houston will have an online
parts store soon (with up-to-date prices . . . for me this will be very
handy!)
Stephen even included a short technical article on speedo angle drive
maintenance, with the proper lubrication procedure. I wish I had known
that two years ago, before I killed my own angle drive on the trip to
Nashville. There were a few more paragraphs about DeLorean related
products like the carcoon, DMC T-shirts and such.

A very common source for tapping sounds in a DeLorean engine is a
simple exhaust gasket leak. In a DeLorean this sounds a LOT like a
valve tap, and it happens to DeLoreans all the time. This might be your
problem. I have never repaired this myself, but I have heard that it can
be a difficult job, involving bolts broken off in the aluminum engine
block.
I suggest that you do not mess around with your valves until you have
checked out the possibility of an exhaust gasket leak.

requested to the seller a complete photograph report, and I'm waiting for
it.
My question is, would I buy a good running DeLorean for $13,000? Or I'm
going to get in trouble? Would anybody help me? It's really hard buying a
car abroad!

Yes, this is a fairly reliable way to date a DeLorean, although the
luggage
compartment lids are interchangeble. There is no reason why an early
81 could not have a flapless lid from a later car, and vice-versa.

ALL DeLoreans were made with the gas tank and refill inlet in the same
location. On cars with no flap, you must open the luggage compartment
lid to refuel.
I like my flap, since it means I don't have to raise the whole lid to pump
gas and I don't risk spilling gas in the luggage area. But I think lids
with
the gas flap are less rigid and they may warp slightly over time. I do
not
believe that the flap (or lack thereof) is dangerous in any way.

SPRING BREAK, circa mid eighties cheese film starring Tim Robbins had
a delorean sitting outside of a ritzy house. It was showed for a few
seconds, long enough to be recognized anyway. This is the only time I
saw a delorean in movie other than the BTTF trilogies.
I heard that one of the characters in the Movie FIERCE CREATURES drove
a delorean but I haven't seen anything, or heard anything to confirm
that.

You may be unsubscribed from the DeLorean Mailing List without even
realizing it, or without even doing anything wrong! How, you ask?
By letting your mailbox get full on your ISP's server. More often than
not, you have a certain amount of space on your ISP's server for incoming
mail. By letting this get full, new mail to you is returned to the
sender. I notice this particularly on AOL, JUNO and most .edu accounts. I
will generally continue the subscription for a few days, in hopes that
you will clean out your mailbox, but if they keep getting returned to me
I will unsubscribe the account because it's a pain in the neck for me.
Obviously, there is no way for me to warn you of this, since I can't send
you email either. Best I can say is that if you suddenly stop receiving
your DeLorean Mailing List for a few days (live) or a week or more
(digest), you probably got unsubscribed.

I need to know about the exhaust manifolds for my rebuilt engine. Are they
standard Volvo exhaust manifolds or specific for the D? Anyone have any?
What is the best clutch aNd pressure plate to use on the Delorean? Will do
thaT to before I replace the engine?
Should I replace the waterpump also. Any other things I should get done
while engine is out? Don't wANt to go through more expense later. Would
like
to communicate with someone that has replaced their engine aNd
supplementary
parts and any good advice you may have.

at the time when i bought my car I was having a hard time finding them at
a price i could deal with. I went with a company on the net from
california (i'm in NY) who seemed to pick them up from auctions and such.
while i did get a deal on the car, when it arrived, there were a few
things wrong that weren't shown in the pictures (i.e. small golf ball
sized dents, broken window switch, electrical problems, etc.). the
company I bought from was Chequered Flag Int'l and had I had the resources
at the time I would have tried to get someone to go check out the car
before i purchased it. I purchased mine for about the same price and now
realize that it was most likely a little too much.

It has a "latch", not a "lock". Released from inside the car
under the instrument cluster via a pull handle. So, if your doors
are locked, then so is the trunk.

The cable that runs from the nadle to the latch is just a simple bike
brake cable. I got one from my local bike shop and cut it to the right
size. Works great. I iamgine the same thing could be used for the engine
cover, too.

Check the discussion/pictures on the DeLorean Owners Association's web
page. Go to

As Mike Substelny's RE: states, the three hoods are interchangeable. My
car is an early '81 (VIN 1141) and should have the hood with the fuel
flap. However, it was once in a front ender and the current hood is the
last style (no flap, no style lines). (Also no raised logo.)

Cars with fuel doors are early 81 cars. The hoods (bonnet) are
interchangable
so it is possible that someone with a late 81 or 82/83 car could have had
a replacement hood with a fuel door installed. The hood was considered
to be a single unit, although it is actually a stainless skin glued on to
a
rigid framework. The (stamping ) of the stainless changed mid way
through the 81 production run but the understructure remained the same.
So, if you look at a car without a fuel door, you will notice that there
is
still a cutout under the stainless where the fuel door would go, its just
simply covered in carpet. As far as I know, the only reasons for
changing
was to save $ because of fewer pieces and stampings. And, the somewhat
unworkable nature of stainless was causing an unacceptable number of hoods
to crack during the stamping process due to the sharp bends around the
fuel
door section and the 2 character lines. Someone correct me if I'm wrong
on
that.
Other than that, everything else is in the same place.

There is a latch under the driver's side dashboard that operates like
modern day cars, probably because the D is a modern car. On what cars does
the hood open with a key?
Also, a related question for fellow owners:
Does anybody's engine or luggage compartments have springs to exert upward
pressure on the hatches so they pop open when unlatched? I have to
manually
pull up on either while activating the cable, which isn't real easy to do
on the rear. Or is the latch supposed to spring the catch out when it is
activated?

I've updated my webpage. I've made A LOT of changes. Among those are a =
tech tip section donated by Don Steger of DeLorean Motor Center in =
Calif. I will update this regularly and welcome any tech tips others =
may have and will give full credit to whom ever supplies them. I also =
have added a small parts section which I will be adding to. This =
section is made possible by Bill Burden, a super nice and knowledgeable =
guy. The page does take awhile to load, however, but I am working on =

The front luggage compartment has a spring that should "eject" the hood
upward when you pull the handle. The spring tension is further increasead
as you pull the handle, but I have noticed that lots of cars have weak
springs.
Also, if the hood catch doesn't align exactly with the latch, then it
will
drag or catch on the side and not pop up.

Fuel flap: I've heard a couple of stories. The flap was dangerous in an
impact due to flying up at the windscreen, and it had a tendancy to be
snapped off by a car-wash. Incidentally, the stripes down the hood that
were removed for the late 82-83 cars were causing the hoods to crack in
the mold.
The hood release lever is located by the driver's left knee. (When he's
driving the car :-)

Subject: DML: Is a DeLorean a "typical" 80s car?
Last night Comedy Central ran an infomercial type show about "The
Wedding Singer." The movie is set in the 80s, and the producers wanted
to fill it with things to make the audience nostalgic for that decade.
They
even ran through a list of the things they put in the movie to make the
audience harken back to the 80s.
Prominent on that list was the DeLorean.
Why do the producers think a DeLorean will make their audience
nostalgic for the 80s? Except for car enthusiasts, most people I meet
don't even realize that the DeLorean was only made in the 80s. The
dimmer ones (most likely to go to an Adam Sandler movie) think it's been
made since the 70s, and that its still in production!
I think the producers really blew it. If they wanted to make people
remember the 80s, they should have put him in a Japanese car like a
Supra or a 300ZX.
Still, It will be nice to see the DeLorean. I hope it makes a good
impression.

Subject: DML: Three DeLoreans for Sale in Phoenix
There are three DeLoreans for sale in Phoenix, two 81's (VIN 4XXX and
67XX) and an 83 (VIN 15XXX). All are five speeds with grey interiors. The
earlier 81 is being offered at $18K, the later 81 is in considerably
rougher shape, but runs and drives, would probably go for $5,000. The 83
is not cherry, either with a lot of modifications and some minor body
damage. I think it might go for $10K. I have no financial interest in any
of these, but can turn you on to the owners if you are truly interested
and have the cash to buy these cars.
I can offer a few more details on these cars to anyone who is truly
interested and qualified to buy. Call me in the evenings at 602/464-1085.

I was talking with someone on IRC the other day about deloreans. They
asked
me a very interesting question about the design that i have never really
thought of before. We all know that the stainless steal design is one of
the
greatest beuties of the car. What he asked me is why haven't any other
manufacturers ever designed a car with a stainless steel design? I simply
told him that no one has ever had the dream to produce a beauty like
delorean
had. Which i feel this is very true. But still, why hasn't any other
companies ever attempted to produce a stainless steal car. I think it
would
be a major benifit. After all, it doesn't need paint and it doesn't rust.
