I'm pretty sure Marc was being facetious with his "5 speed automatic"
comment, but for the record, the Taurus was offered with 3 (slightly)
different automatic transmissions from '89 to present (all of them 4
speeds):
AXOD - mechanically controlled, in all ATX Tauruses from 1989-1992ish
AXODE/AX4S - electronically controlled, synchronized, in most ATX
Tauruses from 1992ish-present
AX4N - electronically controlled, nonsynchronized, in the remainder of
Tauruses from 1992ish-present (mainly taxi, police and towing packages)
and all ATX SHOs.
And some say that the SHO version of the AX4N is its own tranny, but I
think there are only a couple small differences in some parts (plus it
doesn't have it's own designation).
