Your fare may have been cheap but it's killing the airline industry.
We're barely staying afloat these days. Fuel prices are a complex
equation. All I can save is the oil companies are pocketing record
profits (again) and in CA it's even more of an issue.
However, your point is well taken. Americans pay peanuts for gasoline
compared to developed countries in Europe. Our gas prices are way
below what they should be even when adjusted for inflation. We whine
only because we're used to cheap fuel. Try paying what the Brits or
French do. However, when I was in Russia and Ukraine back in June gas
(benzina as they call it) was very cheap. Anyone would love to have
their prices.
It's really apples to oranges anyway. Jet fuel and avgas represent a
tiny fraction of all refined fuels. Plus they're not allowed to use
the same pipes, tanks, trucks, anything, that mogas (motor vehicle
gas) is. It's all kept seperate and that drives the cost up. Trust me
it's painful to pump something like 180 gallons of avgas at $3.50 a
pop or 1500 gallons of Jet A at $3.35 and then burn through it in a
few hours. Stick with cars, your wallet will thank you.
