Under normal circumstances, brake fade is caused by the pads heating up and producing gasses which get trapped between the pad and disc causing a "cusion". This is what cross-driilled discs are for - to give the gas somewhere to go though this is becoming less and less popular than simply buying pads that can go to a higher temp before the gasses become a problem.
