Not with the Ford Focus, but I do have SOME experience with the
EGR-valve on an Opel Corsa; it didn't work well either and was
finally fixed to an "open" (no recirculation) state...

Car worked fine after that, only the O2-sensor fouled a bit
sooner than should have been normal because of the gases being
"dirtier' as they adn't passed the combustion again...

In effect the EGR-valve has somewhat the same function as the
intake valve on a DeLorean; making the car heat up faster,
so it runs within pollution-specs sooner...

And just as many people do on their D (if not prohibited by
state-law) EGR-valves get removed of "fixed" many times too...
