You found the maplin stuff to be as good as 3M spray74? Were you breathing fumes that day?! :-) Later cars had a fibreboard backing to the carpet, which is a mixed blessing because if you need to get to the fuel pump in a hurry (side of M4 for example...) you have to remove everything out from under the bonnet. With just the carpet, you can shove things about and/or use it as a bit sling to dump your valuables into the mud on the verge....
