Classics on the Common

2005 Report & 2006 Update

Happy New Year to you all,

Please take a moment to read this email which includes the report on
2005 and most importantly the current position regarding an event in 2006!

2005

Well it had to happen one year! After 11 glorious years (OK we had a
shower at 5pm one year) we picked a stinker, not only did it rain a lot,
it was also the coldest July day for 25 years. Early that morning whilst
staking out the ground John and I were informed by the Town Council that
permission to use the hayfield for spectator parking was withdrawn due
to ground conditions. A minor blow but that permission was always on the
understanding that ground conditions were suitable, we hastily changed
the spectator parking signs to direct people to the Town car parks. As
the entrance to the Common was clearly going to churn up the Town Warden
very kindly agreed to arrange for a load of chippings to be laid at the
entrance to limit the mud, a great success. Despite the weather over
1,000 hardy vehicles attended, the bulldog spirit or utter madness? The
atmosphere on the Common was excellent and the reduced numbers made
marshalling easier as well as limiting any possible damage to the
Common. It is always a pleasure to meet you all on the night.

I have virtually no photos to update the website with if you have some
please feel free to send the in. Photographs of the event are on line on
the sites of two photographers who attended the event, both sites are
well worth visiting;

Despite the reduced numbers we made a record amount and this year we
were able to donate over £3,000 to local charities, as follows;

Grove House Hospice              £1,200

St. Georges School                               £1,200

Police Cadets                                       £200

Blue Cross Kimpton                             £200

Red Cross Harpenden                          £100

Herts Police Widows & Orphans          £100

Harpenden Rotary                                £70

As always very many thanks to all of those who help, it wouldn't be
possible to organise without the support of those who help set up,
steward, offer advise & support and all of you who attend and enjoy.

2006 or not!

At present no date has been set for 2006 and the future of the event is
in doubt. I'll as briefly as possible explain why. In 2003 as the event
became more and more popular we got told off by the police, spectators
cars and classic cars unable to get onto the Common parked wherever they
could and caused chaos. As a direct result in 2004 pre-booking became
necessary and provision was made for spectator parking on an area of
Common known as the 'hayfield'. Permission for this was given by DEFRA
and the Town Council. All of this was a great success we were happy, the
Police were happy, the Town Council was happy and in September 2004 a
full meeting of the Town Council gave permission for us to use the
'hayfield' for spectator parking at future events subject to the ground
conditions. In 2005 we didn't use the 'hayfield' due to the ground
conditions but with the reduced attendance we had no parking difficulties.

As is usual after the event we had a meeting with both the Police and
Town Council to discuss any issues arising, everyone was happy with how
the event had gone. The Town Council advised us that one member of the
public had complained about parking on the 'hayfield' and the matter was
going back before the Town Council on the 7th November. I attended that
meeting and permission to use the 'hayfield' for spectator parking was
withdrawn. I won't say here what I think of certain Councillors and some
of the comments made by them, but the staff employed at the Town Hall
are and always have been excellent.

None of the areas used as exhibition areas are affected but as the event
has become popular with spectators I cannot responsibly ignore them
without the potential for chaos on the night. We have investigated a
number of possible solutions so far without success, the Town Council
has offered use of the 'picnic area' off Walkers Road but that would
mean spectators crossing an unlit road subject to the national speed
limit.

So let me know what you think, has Classics on the Common passed it's
sell by date or do you want it to continue. Can you propose a solution?

I look forward to hearing you views.

Peter Madden
