Fair enough, although the 328i can't have been lacking in the power department, and the Beemer six-pot units are most of the reason why people buy these cars so that's always a plus point.
I too have driven a Saab cabrio but it was the 93 on a "T" plate and I completely agree they are very solid cars with good engines, but they don't make a noise when you put your foot down that excites you, whereas Beemers do.
Still, I think if you want a Saab surely you can get a good 900 for about 2-3k these days with a moddest mileage.
To be honest I reckon the Beemer you drove must've been an early E36 or basically one that was built before they sorted out the built quality. Early cars I admit are badly built given Bm's reputation, but anything built after '97 should be solid as a rock.
My car is a '99 MY and it's extremely well-built, yet I know someone with a '93 version of the same car and the difference is huge, but then that's the case of any manufacturer really isn't it. Early versions of any car are never as good as later ones because they won't have perfected the design and/or building process.
I have yet to have any rattles in my E36, but then it is very low mileage so maybe that one you drove had higher mileage, I don't know. Either way there must be a reason because BMW are not known for building bad quality cars after all.

Hi Mike,
I drove (for quite some distance) recently a 328iSE Convertible -
quite frankly, going by how highly you rate the E36, I was very
disappointed with the build quality (panels rattling all over the
place), the scuttle shake and the actual drive of the thing. It hadnt
even done that many miles (about 40 odd thou) and was wearing very
badly. Later that day, I drove a 900 Convertible with 115,000 miles
(2.0 Auto) of the same age, and it was so much nicer, more solid
feeling, less rattles, quieter - I was very surprised.
Also, as I know several people who currently/used to work BMW and have
done for 9yrs+, I am aware of the problems with the E36 (swimming pool
for a boot in your convertible anyone?) and that is another reason for
not wanting one.
I know the Megane and Astra arn't perfect, but I know them well, and
if the budget wont stretch to a Saab 900 then I'll probably look out
for one of those instead.

Claire
