Hi Andy
My vin is 6484 and it was built in November 1981. 
There should be a vin number showing in your front windscreen on the drivers side. On mine there is a plate inside the drivers door. If you open the door it is near the door bolt where the door locks down when closed and this has the vin no again plus the build date.
