The bobble on the spool end is just to stop the wires fraying I guess,
mine doesn't have one - use lots of heat, and just solder the tip

The cable takes quite a convoluted route, use light oil along the
wire...

No idea how much, I've not replaced mine, but it's the same wire as for
the bonnet catch. Get 5m it's cheap enough, then you'll have spare for
bonnet too :)
