The bobble on the spool end is just to stop the wires fraying I guess, mine doesn't have one - use lots of heat, and just solder the tip The cable takes quite a convoluted route, use light oil along the wire... No idea how much, I've not replaced mine, but it's the same wire as for the bonnet catch.
