No indeed, I've made them myself many times, but when you take your car
in for an MOT and the garage claim that the pipe has broken during
testing, in an inaccessible area and you cant drive it away because it
has no brakes...let alone an MOT, my brother felt he had little choice
but to let them get on with it.

If the car goes to a dealer, they'll refit with an original formed steel
pipe. If you go to an independent who has the ability to make pipes, you
can get a new copper one made that can be threaded into place and formed
by hand. The tools to do this aren't particularly expensive.
