Good point...i dont think a lot of owners thought about that as it looks like a dateless plate at first glance.

  auctioned, the DVLA wrote to me and told me it was up for grabs as I
  had axsked for it to be released 5 yrs ago, hoping I could find an 83'
  D  - Would you have been able to use the number? your car would need
  to be made on or after Aug 82 to use it (Y Reg), I couldn't have used
  it as 'Sorbet' is effectively an X plate.
