Hi John
Ref the SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification), if your car is not taxed in
the UK you must declare it with the DVLA as SORN. This means that the car
must be parked off the road completely, i.e. in a garage or on a private
driveway/private land.
If you fail to notify the DVLA that your car is off the road and it remains
unlicenced (whether off road or not) they will take further action,
including a £40 fine (increases to £80 if you don?t pay) and ultimately they
can seize and crush the car as well as taking you to court.
So to recap, if it?s parked on the road, it must display a current and valid
tax disc. If the tax has run out or you have surrendered it for a refund,
you must declare the car as SORN whether or not it is parked on private land
or in a garage.
I forgot to declare SORN on my 1983 Mk1 Astra last year when it came up for
renewal in June, and in August I was landed with a £40 fine. Because the
car is ?out of sight, out of mind?, in a garage in another part of town I
completely forgot about it. I don?t see the car with its faded tax disc
that expired in June 1999 everyday after all to remind me! That explanation
did not wash with the DVLA and I paid up and renewed the SORN. Naturally,
this year, I won?t be making the same mistake!!
Hope this helps,
Claire

Is taking everything to bits the only way of knowing
how bad the valley of death is? I am taking my D to
the garage tmr for changing to Euro Springs... Is it
worth asking them to take those things out for me to
check for coolent leaks?
If so, how hard is the job? (Man hours?)
Cheers,
