[doc] Locked Fuel Pump (again!)

Hi guys,

Hope someone can assist!

Any ideas what would lock the fuel pump apart from dirt in the tank? Could excess pressure cause a problem? Or maybe something engine side rather than at the tank?

I have had a problem with 1772 chewing up pumps nearly just as quick as she drinks petrol!  I thought I cured the problem before Christmas as I put the mysterious locking down to the pump access panel pinching the supply hoses. I have travelled some 200 miles without a problem.  However on Monday (which was my 25th Birthday too!)  1772 decided to play the old cutting out game again through Norwich and yep you guessed it the fuel pump was locked again.

I know it must sound like crap in the tank but she has had a new tank, lines flushed out with acetone, new pick up hose and filter in the tank too!  There is power getting to the pump and the inertia switch has not tripped either.

The reason why I wonder if pressure could be a problem is because the supply hose from the pump to the fuel line split the other day but I just put this down to an old pipe rather than any specific fault.  After 1772 did cut out I noticed alot of pressure in the supply lines from the pump.  Especially the return line which was solid although when I removed it from the pump end the line was dry.

I intend to check the fuel line at various stages (ie filter, engine entry, frequency valve, accumulator etc) just to double check for any foreign material but any other suggestions/ideas of why the pump would lock would lock would be gratefully received.

BTW after spending several hours on the roadside, the helpful recovery chap used to work at Lotus and he assures me that there are still 2 D's at the factory in Hethel!  Didn't quiz him too much as I didn't feel that reassured by him, although a decent chap but I guess you never know!

Regards

Peter
