For what it's worth, my cooling fans usually kick it just as the needle has
crept over the mark that's a quarter of the way up the guage (can't remember
the value in F). Most of the time, even on long hot motorway runs, the
needle is under this and the fans are off. Few mins in standing traffic
brings 'em on though. It's dead satisfying to hear the click, whirr, and
see the temp. dropping.
