There, Mike, you have completely missed the point about what body panels
are for. They are just cosmetic, and do not contain any structural
properties. All the strength is behind the panels. In the case of
Renaults (all now except Kangoo) having the wings made of Noryl, the
idea is in a frontal impact that wing will just crack or come off,
therefore not shoving itself back into the front door and stopping that
from opening. You look in any car brochure, and there will be a nice
picture of the car, minus it panels, showing all the parts that make up
the rigid safety cell on new cars which is designed to protect you in an
impact. Check out www.euroncap.com <http://www.euroncap.com/> , and you
will see some good and bad examples of safety cells.
Top Gear are very tongue in cheek, you know as well as I do that there
are millions of French cars on the road over 12 months old that are
still intact. Martin Gutkowski is driving an elderly Citroen BX at the
moment which was sideswiped at high speed by an Audi - the Citroen is
hardly marked!
Anyway, I'm going back to driving a Vauxhall from next week (as well as
the DeLorean) :o)
At the end of the day, Mike, we have different views. I hate BMW's, you
hate French cars. End of subject.

Don't worry, I won't be starting off a spate of "these cars are crap"
postings because I also quite like the MG ZT as it has a certain
character about it.
My problem is quite simply with French cars as even someone that's a fan
of them can't deny that they're not particularly well-built, at least
not when compared to the quality of the German competitors.
"Top Gear" regularly joke about French cars falling about after a year
or so and there's good reason for that.
Personally, I've never quite got over the fact that Clio and Laguna
front wings are made of plastic so when you press on it it bents.
Hmmmm, not a sign of solidity.
