RE: [doc] Traces of oil (?) in coolant

The symptoms you describe Dan are of fuel in the oil, not oil in the coolant.

You could get the oil sampled from the cooling system.

You can get water pump coolant lubricant, which is a thin oil that is put in
the cooling system to help lubricate the water pump bearing so don't always
dismiss it as a problem.

To see if you have a water leak, get the cooling system pressure tested.
This should show leaks. The pressure should also hold for a time too.

Also do a cylinder leakage test (or a compression test if the leakage test
equipment is not available) .

You could also get the garage to use thier CO meter to 'Sniff' the air from
the coolant from the plastic reservoir tank when the engine is running and is hot
Any signs of CO is a sign that there is a leak from the combustion process to
the cooling system. This would be a sign of head gasket issues.

Without doing proper tests it's hard to tell.

Hope this helps,

NickT.

Hi Stian

One thing to ask is has your car been rich at all ?
If so then it might be unburnt petrol in the oil that
has got there the combustion chambers.

If it has been running rich and you have now sorted
the problem it is best to do an oil and filter change.

I don't think I'd get too excited about "traces" if it
gets more than
that, then you may have a problem. Simply remove one
or two of the
rubber hoses off the engine, then stick the hose pipe
up each direction
for several minutes after it has all run clean.
Remember to use a good
quality antifreeze to inhibit rusting/ corrosion.
Messy, but not easy
to cock up.

Maybe this has been covered before... still -
I've noticed a rainbowish colour in the coolant (like
petrol in water)
It's not much - very little in fact - is this normal,
if not what do I
do? Am I in for a head gasket job? Or?

Also, does anyone have a simple procedure on how to
change the coolant
yourself? Thanks.

Best wishes
