Here's another option for those who are suffering the same problem but who already have the original backing board stuff in place: To prevent sagging over the spare wheel, glue a block of strong foam under the relevant bit of backing board so that it supports the board over the spare wheel. My '93 Honda Civic daily driver has this type of arrangement in the boot (with a similarly thin bit of backing board). Thanks to the foam I can transport my drum kit in the boot of the Honda without the carpet and board sagging into the wheel well.
