As I said, this was something I looked into for my project car and was 
told very firmly by Darren not to bother, and to buy a new one. So I 
did in Houston earlier this year - a brand new, still sealed compressor 
is $272 from them.

For the amount of work your AC bloke seems to have put in, £100 seems 
like mates rates to me....
