Have had this too; the "bendix" (the gear on the starter)
probably didn't engage the toothed edge of the flywheel,
if this happens the relay that actually switches the starter
on doesn't engage. This is designed to engage only if the
"bendix" is fully out, into the fywheel...

When this happens you usually only need to put the car in gear
and roll it a bit, this rotates the flywheel and you're sorted!

Am not sure if this system applies to DeLoreans too, but I've had
this happen on mine too, as well as my Escort, my Nissan and the
Volkswagen from work, so it's not really a biggy...
