The studs going through the knuckle are tapered, so is the hole they fit into. With the track rods in this way, you would have no way of torqueing the the ball joints to spec without damaging something. On mine the nuts are on top, my car is lowered. I've had the left nut off several times when servicing the Angle Drive (like 5 of 6 times within a year...) and I know they can REALLY be a pain in the behind to get out because of the mentioned taper...
