Paul,
To check if the compressor runs (with or without gas etc)  - just disconnect the little bullet junction on the red wire above the compressor and hold a piece of wire from the red jump connector on the right of the engine bay to this connector.  The compressor should turn irrespective of other pressure cut off switches.
