Dear All,
after a wonderful weekend in Devon with my fiance Paula, and my Delorean Lola, I was let down in a huge way by my coolant system. I just can't understand this thing. She was running fine all of Saturday and Sunday, no problems at all. Looking as beautiful as I described before. Even the performance was starting to sort itself out, and I was getting better and better engine responce. Then on Monday morning, I had driven only 15 miles or so, and without notice the coolant system built up too much pressure, and started leaking onto the engine, and dripping onto the ground. I stopped the car, let it cool down, then drove onlyanother 2 miles and again it started to overheat, build up pressure, and overflow onto the engine again. Luckily there was an ATS a few hundred meters up the A361 in Barnstable. They got the car up on a ramp, and checked thehoses I couldn't get to, which were tight, then the hoses connecting directly to the bottom of the expansion bottle(stainless on mine). We tightened everything, then fed more fluid into the cooling system, trying to let the air locks bubble their way out. We felt that we had been successful, with the car pumping its coolant around in a nice fashion. Leaving the car on theramp, running for a while longer, we thought we'd got rid of any air locks, when suddenly the coolant blasted its way out of the top of the now loosened expansion bottle cover, and splattered it all over the the engine, and the garage floor. In the end I had to flat bed the car back to Bath, along with a very pissed off fiance. I think you all know what this is going to lead to.......advice please?
A few other niggles I've had over the weekend. Still can't find that disconnected diode for the internal and door lights. Where the hell is that thing on a right hand drive?
My engine fans don't seem to be kicking in, everytime they are needed. Canyou remind me about the modual for this Martin, and if I need to have it modified, or removed?
My temperature meter has never worked, certainly the dashboard needle has never moved, what is the replacement for this unit, and where is the sensorlocated in the engine?
How much would new injectors cost, what model number do I need to specifiyfor the part, where from, and the same for spark plugs. Would a combination of both, improve performance if I do find that some injectors are not producing a clean spray. Did you say you tried to clean out Robs injectors, ifso how?
Other than these little problems, Lola (as PSO is now to be known), is in great condition, and I love her to pieces. Even Paula said that she was beginning to fall in love with the car, and that is saying something. She saidshe knows little about cars in general, but the strongest feeling she had about the car, was that it had a heart, and alot of character. After this weekend, I can only agree:) As many answers as you guys can muster please, I'm on a high with my Delorean right now. Oh, and about owning a Delorean when you are young, I agree, it is a very expencive hobby, but it gets cheaper all the time you learn about the car yourself. Many of the jobs I now do on Lola, I used to have my mechanic do for me, etc etc. Only real killer, is the loan for the purchase of the car. You'll have to have something to balance it with(house property etc), or use your parents as a way of guaranteeing the loan( not always an option). The insurance can be cheaper through a parent, but still a killer. For example, my insurance is GBP 1100 a year,as a fully comp named driver on my fathers insurance, which was about the cheapest I could find for a 21 year old. At 17, I don't know if this would work. Don't loose the dream what ever you do. For all the sceptics words, Istill think that owning a Delorean is a fantastic experience, and I truelylove my car. As my fiance said, they have a heart and can love you back. (But not always:)
Stephen.
P.S. Any ideas to questions posed, greatlyappreciated.
