List, If you do buy a bolt and have it plated, you must ensure that it is subsequently "de-enbrittled". Any sort of electro-plating causes hydrogen enbrittlement. Heat treatment is the way to remove it. My day job is electro-plating, but we don't get involved in de-enbrittleing. It's only really important when a bolt is working near its extreme limits of strength, as seems to be the case here.
