[doc] Tracker installation day

Eveninâ all,
Following on from a conversation between some DOC members at the NEC, just thought Iâd post an update on the GPS tracker that Glen Hale has developed for the DeLorean. For those of you whoâve been keeping up with such things, you may remember that Glen was looking for someone to test the prototype of his design on their DeLorean. Since I live fairly locally to Glen, I took the plunge and offered to help him out, on the strict condition that there was to be NO drilling or modification carried out on my car!! As something of a DMC perfectionist, I would have it no other way ;)
Well, after a couple of chilly hoursâ work outside today (at least it stayed dry!) the first prototype version has been successfully installed in my DeLorean with no mods to the car whatsoever (phew!). The installation was nice and simple and Glen did a good job of hiding all the wires for the various bits and bobs. The unit has its own wiring loom hidden away in the fusebox and there is a little antennae and transmitter stuck on the windscreen, but other than that, you wouldnât know it was there at all.
>From my mobile phone, I can now text my DeLorean and âaskâ it what its grid reference is and even what speed itâs travelling at! Glen showed me how to look up the grid reference on the internet so you can pinpoint your car on a map. Obviously, itâs quite a handy gizmo if (God forbid) the car ever gets stolen.
Glen tells me that the main control unit we tested today is not the final (production) version. He has a second version of the unit which is currently with Martin G. Weâre going to plug this one into the wiring loom next week for testing, all being well. [[BTW Martin, Glen asked could you forward the unit to his home address]] This second unit will apparently enable me to immobilise the car and work the central locking via text message too. Iâll keep you all posted with how things go, but score the initial results as very good.
Happy motoring everyone,
Phil Peters
