At the risk of Martin G getting all techy on me, I thought I'd explain
about the differences between UK and US radios:
The FCC in the US says that no two FM band stations can be closer
together than 0.5 MHz, so many digital tuners scan up or down in 0.5 MHz
increments. In Europe the FM band is about the same as the US, but the
difference between stations can be as close as 0.05MHz. I think the
Craig stereo scans in only 0.5 MHz increments (many US digital stereos
do this) so you miss many European stations, or are only able to get
them a little off frequency. If you had a manual tuner then this would
not be an issue. The AM band is similar. The US FCC regulates the
difference between stations to be at least 10 KHz apart, so again most
digital tuners scan in 10KHz increments. In Europe the regulations say
that 9KHz is all that is needed between stations, so most European
digital radios scan in 9KHz increments. In the AM mode, there are a lot
of stations you will miss. Some car stereos have a hidden switch under
the faceplate or on the back that will let you switch between the
systems. I have no idea if the Craig radio has this facility - perhaps
someone would like to do an autopsy on one and let everyone know.
Regards
Paul
