To Check for a blocked/ collapsed cat, use a stethoscope on the cat to see if you can hear the baffles rattling.
Bosch manual method is to stick a pressure gauge in the Oxygen sensor hole and with engine running at idle measure exhaust back pressure. Anything more than 2psi would indicate baffle/ cat problems.

You are describing the exact same symptoms as I experienced due to a
blocked silencer (when the catalytic convertor disintegrated).
I made the mistake of watching the temp gauge and assumed all
was 'cool' in the engine bay. The engine didn't heat up but the
silencer did, destroying my original heat shield and warping the
bottom of my rear facia.
Martin and our other experts will be able to advise how to check...
