I think really it comes from watching Smokey and the Bandit too many times as a kid! 

Judging by Claire's suggested route though I may not end up meeting the "Norfern Massive" till we're on the A47: my routeplanner is suggesting cutting directly across the Midlands via the M6 then jumping on the A14 towards Kettering, then travelling through Peterborough and up towards Kings Lynn.
