In fact when i did mine i found it a lot easier to get the lower 
half of the column back through the bush and into the upper u joint 
without all the extra weight of the rest of the column. 
The rest of the coloum just slides back over afterwards.
One more thing ...the retaining bolt on the upper u joint fits into 
the circular groove between the splines ie dont push the column 
right back into the upper u joint otherwise the bolt wont go back 
in . This ia another 'how too' im attempting to finish off :) Pics
