Yeah, the car was off her own weight for about a month with the wheels off.
I also fitted the lowering springs.  So that could be it.

 

I had been driving all day yesterday and drove around 60 miles before it
happened.

Have you had the front end jacked up for a while with the front 
wheels hanging down ?...

Maybe it was one of the suspension springs reseating itself, they 
can make a rather discerning noise when they do it :)
