Ah! I think I've just "got" the faff reference. When I said
"To change the cams means pulling the heads off (well, okay, it can be 
done without but what a faff!)"
I meant that you either have to take the engine out and dismantle the 
rockers on the engine, rotating the engine as you go to put each 
cylinder in turn at TDC firing stroke enabling the rod to be slid out 
one valve at a time.... or you can take the heads of.
I think you'll agree taking the heads off is less of a faff! And once 
you've taken the heads off, pulling the engine is a sinch, and you only 
need to take the sump off to enable you to cnage pistons vs a more work 
to change out the crank case - and at least you -know- everything in the 
engine's healthy.
