Thanks Martin, it's like a rattle as if somethings rubbing or something insides come loose when the plate at the front of the unit is spinning, it could be as you say maybe a bearing, the air con still blows cold?!?! Prob best you take a look, leave it to the expert.

  Probably the idler pulley bearings. We do them for a fiver each. I have 
  seen one compressor witha shot bearing. Never changed one though I have 
  a spare compressor kicking around that I can pull to pieces for parts
