Yea thats true. Its probably just another crazy story added onto the DMC legend over the years! The VW Porche does look kinda similar though!
Wasnt the DeLorean modelled on the Esprit, or was that just Guigario's style of drawing at the time? If it was modelled on the Esprit, then it couldnt have been a rejected drawing by Porche.

PS - good article in Car Magazine, Jason Barlow actually had a sit in
Flopsy at the Bishop's Stortford car show in 2003 - I got a picture of
him sitting in her and his autograph too with a personal message :oD
