I recon a small red flashing LED near your  steering wheel with give the
impression of a car alarm/ immobiliser for a fraction of cost and
probably be a good deterrent.  
 
 My son has successfully used on of these efforts that poke through your
steering wheel, for the last couple of years "down in the smoke".
