Many thanks for your replies and think its a great
idea for the more experienced club members to start up
in importing the cars. I note your comments on other
members experiences and I might be better served to
sit and wait to see how new scheme gets on and become
one of its first customers.
Thanks for the invitation to join the club I joined at

Yes, Simon, 5% tax is payable.

The shortage of cars for sale in the UK has resulted
in an increasing number
of people looking abroad to find their "dream car".

Some of our members have had very successful
experiences of personal
importing. However, some had found it a very traumatic
experience. It all
really depends on what you buy, what you pay and what
you end up getting! If
you have time to personally inspect it, go in with
your eyes open, all
should go well.

However, I have been told of cars being offered for
sale, even on EBay,
where the descriptions, even the photographs were of
another car entirely!
Exercise great caution. After all if it was such a
good "restoration
project" in the States, it should could easily sell
there.

I think the success of any restoration relies on
selecting the right car. I
have several club members who have ended up with a
nightmare. That does
nothing for them or the car.

You may be interested to note that a group of club
members (no connection
with me) are in the process of setting up a "DeLorean"
car importing
business, to try and ensure a steady flow of selected,
"restorable" cars
available in this country. I believe they will also
arrange to vet a car, of
your choice, in the states and make all the importing
arrangements. Things
are still at an early stage, but you may think its
worth holding on a little
so await developments.
I would expect some sort of announcement soon.

P.S. Have you joined the club yet? We can point
you towards spares at
sensible money.

Subject: [doc] re importing a delorean (costs

Can anyone be so kind as to advise me of the costs
involved in
importing a Delorean from the states. Does the 5%
import tax apply to
the purchase price of the car?
Im looking to import a restorable car as Im an
engineer to trade so
dont mind and actually prefer to work on the car.
Any help would be appreciated

Simon
