Cleaning the idle control motor may have solved the problem. Hope so. When I did the check with the 12v on the centre and the 0v on the outer pins, the variable motor spins round v quick, almost instantaneous hence don't connect for more than 0.5 seconds.
Check wiring, double check wiring. (I remember someone saying to me 'check twice, fix once' and this stuckin my head).
If you didn't know already I posted a word doc with pic in on how I repaired an ecu. It might be worthwhile getting this for chip reference and getting them the right way round etc.
If I had a spare ecu i'd have sent it to you to try by substitution. I don't mind repairing them either in exchange for spare 'D' parts (hint hint !)

Tonight I took out my idle speed computer, as a trial I started the car with
it out. You guessed it ..it made no difference what so ever.....

Bench tested the new and old Idle speed motors. one in the car did not
work.... Nor did the new one until I realised it was stuck and a gentle bit
of persuasion had it working every time. will put it back in tomorrow night.

ordered the chip sets Nick suggested. Well its something to do isn't it!!!!
piece of mind and all that..... Lots of soldering over the weekend.

I will solve this idle
