Re: [doc] Downside

Dear John (and all),

It seems unlikely that my car will be ready by the weekend. The engine
rebuild has taken longer than anticipated, and I'm still awaiting a clutch.
Even if they get it back in by the end of the week I would be reluctant to
go far away from base for a while until its reliability has been
demonstrated. There's so much been taken apart that I can't see it all
working properly again without a few snags along the way. I've also found a
lot more rust than I anticipated on the chassis. It seems that every time I
look at it another loads of epoxy flakes off revealing more rust. It needs
a bit of welding near the front but other than that it's mostly surface rust
and I have applied copious quantities of Kurust and Hammerite in order to
tame it as much as I can. It's dificult to know where to stop, short of
taking the whole car apart.

I would still dearly love to visit Downside, John, but I fear it will have
to be another time. I understand that the appeal of a solo car is not the
same as having a whole cavalcade! However, I caused a bit of a stir when I
went back to my old school a year or two ago, and was deferentially directed
to park at the front of the school building rather than sent round the back
with the jags and beemers. Keep in touch.

Dear List,

Is anyone still interested in coming to Downside School?... I remember there
were one or two members who said that they were interested. One of them was
Tony Lawther...

And by the way Stephen, are you guys driving DeLoreans round Bath at 4:00pm
on the Saturday? What time does the event actually starts on the Saturday?

John [286]
