Alistair.

My guess would be an intermediate adapter plugged into the low beam 
relay, which temporarily simulated the 'lights on' action of the main 
switch. 

You could always e-mail bob himself, I have dealt with him before. He 
is always very helpful, but all his products seem 'to do what it says 
on the tin', so there will be a cunning way of doing it without 
*cutting* into the original design...
