It's worth adding that this kind of design is not new. According to
Wikipedia "In 1911 the Macomber Rotary Engine Company of Los Angeles
marketed one of the first axial internal-combustion engines" of a similar
design. The question is why they never really caught on and I've read just
recently that the major problem with this design (swash or wobble plate
engine) is not with cooling or lubrication but the amount of torque that the
plate can withstand and transfer. For that exact reason this design has been
adopted in A/C compressors. It works much better when the shaft is driven
pushing the pistons and compressing a gas than the other way around. In
short, it makes a great pump but not so great engine.

This engine design was a extension of the “swash plate” design in air
conditioning compressors.
The main challenges in this design are cooling and the amount of pressure
the plate could handle and convert into rotational torque.
This concept works well with total submersion in AC coolant and the little
torque necessary for compressing a gas, but
the forces for moving a car and orders of magnitude larger.
