On-Star is a great thing except when it doesn't work... It's a cellphone and
not a sat-phone and because of that there are places where you push the
button and nothing happens. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes, one can say that this is an extreme situation and it doesn't happen
very often but it might happen. Murphy's law states that it will happen at
the worst time and in the worst place.
What do you do if you get a flat, your cell has no reception, the On-Star
button just beeps when you press it and you don't have a spare?? Or an
extinguisher?? If it's just a flat tire you wait for the cavalry to arrive
but when your car catches fire?? A simple short in the wiring might turn
into an inferno consuming the entire car faster that you can imagine... And
it doesn't matter if your car is well maintained or not. These things do
happen... things go wrong.
I still prefer the good old spare tire and an extinguisher in every car I
drive.
