Nick, that is a very neat idea. When it comes to speed GPS is very accurate
by design - 0.05km/h or about 0.03mph.
I see only two problems with using GPS aside from price, which I can't find.
I guess you need to log in to see it.
1. When you hop in and start driving there might be a delay before your
speedo starts working. GPS receivers get their fix quickly when "hot"
starting (a few seconds). "Warm" start takes a bit longer (15-30 seconds).
Cold start might take a few minutes for an accurate fix.
2. It would be kind of strange to see your speedometer die every time you
drive into a tunnel. It might also be problematic in dense cities with tall
buildings.
In my opinion a unit like this would be a great addition to a normal
speedometer where a regular speed sensor provides the speed signal and a GPS
is used to correct it/calibrate it. I don't think it's a good stand alone
solution to the problem.
Just my opinion.
